Eating your own cum 2 - My frozen cum experience
It is some time now that i like eating my cum. During this time I found that self cum eating is so popular among many guys out there, unfortunately it is tragic that almost all of us lose the desire of eating the cum right after we get an orgasm (not to say disgust), fortunately - there are many good forum and chat room in which people share ideas and advises how to overcome that barrier. Some time ago I created a post in which i shared my technique and tips for eating cum (available in this link https://www.reddit.com/ShemaleSwallowsOwnCum/comments/7xcas8/eating_your_own_cum_my_technique_and_tips/), while I got good feedback from some, there were still others that find it hard to edge in order to eat fresh cum.
While edging is great and is the only way that ever work for me to eat my fresh cum - it is very demanding and problematic technique, many times during edging I could not resist and come, sometime I manage to edge and get cum out, yet the edging made me feel over stimulated and in rush to reach orgasm which ruin the fun of enjoying eating my load.
Because of that, I was keep looking for alternative which allow me to savor on my cum. An old approach I tried long time ago was freezing my load and then before consuming it - heating it to reach the original temperature of cum before drinking it (i even use thermometer to get the cum to 37 degrees to make it as real as possible) unfortunately - the cum texture was not preserved and taste was different (not as thick as when I came but rather very thin).
However - freezing cum has one major advantages which allow me to consume it while i am horny, because of that I thought to give it a second chance yet - with a little twist - taking the entire frozen load on my mouth while it is still frozen. Before doing this for the first time I thought to do a 'dry run' with an ice cube to get used to the feeling of having something frozen in my mouth- so I let an ice cube melt in my mouth while I was watching a horny video imagining this is my load, it got me horny and I though what the hell - let's give it try.
For my first time I want to try this with a big nice load so I haven't cum for couple or days, finally I release a nice load in a cute heart shape silicon ice cube tray and put it on the freezer.
The next day, I enjoy myself with nice porn video, when I was in the mood for eating a load of cum I went excited to the freezer, took out the ice cube tray and gently pushed my heart shape load out, since tray was made of silicon, it was very easy to eject. When it was out - i took a curious look - it was a beautiful big size load, look very thick and it had good smell of cum.
Very quickly - before it start to melt - I put it in my mouth. I was so excited and with anticipation for how it going to feel and taste. At the very first seconds it felt like frozen milk, then it start melting slowly - the texture was creamy, the smell was good and the taste was great, I was so excited from the thought that I got full thick load of cum in my mouth while I am so horny and hungry for it. I kept savoring on it when more and more cum continue to melt in my mouth, it felt like thin layers of thick cum keep melting in my mouth till finally my mouth was full with liquid cum. The cum was warmer now and I kept savoring on its taste and smell . During this entire time I was watching a good old video I liked of Wifey from Wifeyworld in which her husband release an enormous thick load of cum in a Champagne glass and she drink it. I was so hard looking in her eyes when we both have huge load of cum in our mouth , knowing how she feel when having it in her mouth.
I took a big gulp and swallow the load in the same time she did, it felt so hot, she was smiling to camera saying to her husband that it was a huge load, I was smiling and saying the same to myself.
During this entire time and after I swallowed I was so hard. Since I know myself that I might be disgusted from the taste of cum after I come, I took the time till the cum taste and texture completely disappeared in my mouth, only then came to orgasm. As always - I was not in the mood after the orgasm, yet since the cum taste was already gone - I did not feel disgust and it all went well.
I was so excited from my new experience. In the following weeks I kept enjoying myself. During a chat I had with someone on Reddit, I shared my experience and he recommended to check out a CEI video which he though I might find interesting. For those that don't know what is CEI - these are videos in which a girl instructing you to eat your own cum (acronym of Cum Eating Instructions). In the last years - this type of video have become very popular. (Which indicate how many guys into it). In the past, I tried many of this videos with the hope that maybe some hot chick could talk me through and make me eat my cum but unfortunately every time the moment she told me to cum - once I did -I immediately lost the desire to swallow my load.
Despite the fact that previous CEI did not work for me, I open the link for the video I received. The video start with the hot babe introducing herself as Jenny and she will be my cum eating instructor. she instructed me to freeze three(!) loads of my cum, then she ask me to stop the video playback and resume it when I have the loads ready. I pause the video. I was so horny and hard. She had a kinky smile like she know that guys like me will watch this and will actually do this. I wanted to do this. I decided that I am going to enjoy this special event with three big thick loads of cum. To produce such big loads - I haven't cum for three days before each load , the fact that I was so horny and some of the time hard contribute to the thickness and the volume of the loads.
A word about cum freezing procedure for those that think of giving this a try. It worth mentioning that every time after I ejaculate my cum in the ice cube tray I got the same annoying feeling of guilt, that I was doing something wrong and what the hell was I thinking, the enthusiasm is replaced with a thought to call this off and throw the cum away. I was never able to ignore this feeling when I wanted to eat fresh cum after getting to orgasm. However - because I am 'only freezing' it and not eating it right away it make it easier to mentally 'fight' this feeling. In such cases, I am trying not to think about what I plan to do with it , I simply put it on the freezer, close the door and and try to think of something else. In less than an hour that concern will be replaced with a pleasant horny thought that I have frozen cum waiting for me in the freezer.
After nine days of hard work I got three beautiful , thick, big size loads of cum waiting for me in the fridge. For years I liked to watch movies of girl blowing three guys, each ejaculating his big load in her wide open mouth, I always liked fantasizing to be that girl that get to swallow their cum - one after one after one. I was so thrilled that tomorrow I am about to eat three loads of cum while being instructed and encouraged by a hot sexy babe!
The night before, I was super horny but also had some fears. I never swallowed so much cum before. I had three loads ready and thanks to my hard work each was large and thick. I recalled that before the first time I swallow my cum I had similar fear, I encourage myself by thinking to myself that many women experienced that at least once in their life by letting their boyfriend come in their mouth, they managed - so can i! However - this time it was different, it was not single load but three, i don't think that any women that I have ever met in my life have ever or will ever swallow three loads of cum.
To calm myself, I thought that I will simply start with the first load and see how it goes. This is not a contest. If I will be in the mood to continue to the second I will, if not, I won't. I also encourage myself with the though that It also took me some time till I managed to eat my first load, so if not this time then the next one.
The next day - when I woke up the first thought that came to my mind was that today is the day. The entire day - all I could though about was that. I remember that on the my way back from work, in the train - I saw good a looking woman, I enjoy myself with the thought that she is interested and I am saying to myself - no chance baby - I am already late for my date with cum eating instructor and i don't plan to share. I was too hot, I felt I need to calm myself not to have a boner in public till I will get home.
Finally I arrived home and start preparing for the special occasion I have been waiting for ten days. I took out my frozen loads from the ice cube tray and put them in a glass plate. I look on the three stunning heart shape load of with a beautiful color of thick cum. It felt like my private Valentine. I took big smell, it had a great smell of cum. I put the plate in the freezer and went my computer.
I was very excited but I also felt very nervous. I thought that I could use a drink, I pour myself a big glass of wine, after couple of minutes I start feeling that alcohol does the work. I took off my clothes and sat naked on the chair in-front of my computer. To warm up I begun with some classic movies I like: I start with Wifey drink a thick load of her husband's cum from a martini glass, continue with Delia Delions (hot shemale babe) frosting cupcakes with her fresh cum and savor on it. (Shemales eating her own cum always make me extra horny). After Delia I was horny to see girl getting multiple facials, I started with the Skye from amateur-facials.com get a monster gooey facial from the three guys and for the last appetizer I watched a hot babe having a cum party in her mouth after three guys ejaculated thick cum into it.
I felt ready for my own party. I had a huge boner which i stroke very gently. I open the link for the video of my cum eating instructor. And there she was with her beautiful kinky smile. I start playing the video from the beginning, I wanted to hear Jenny saying again what are the required ingredients. I smile and tell Jenny I have everything ready for our feast. I was so excited, here we go.
Jenny smile and say: "You must be so excited, you have been spending so much time preparing for this video". I was so hard hearing her acknowledging my hard work preparing for our date. She was from the type of the encouraging cum eating instructor which I like to watch (in the opposite of humiliating type). She continue and said : "I hope you are hungry... You should be hungry... that is a lot of protein!" , she got that right, my insistence on not cumming for three days before each load really prove itself and reflected with big thick cumshots.
She continue: "I want you to Imagine that you naked on your knees. Three beautiful women are standing in-front of you, first one is African American named Ebony, second is blond babe named Blondie and the third is red head cutie named Ginger. They are topples, wearing black skirt that reach to their their knees. They start approaching you till they stands right above you, your face is at height of their waist. They lift their skirt and put it over your head in a way that create small tent on your head. You discover they are not wearing panties, instead of pussies they have beautiful soft cocks. Their beautiful 'pussies' are shaved and left with sexy strip which its hair color reveal which one is which".
During this time my eyes was closed while I imagine the picture my instructor describe. Her voice was sexy and I felt so hard. I open my eyes to look at my dick, it was swinging in excitement. I look on the screen and I saw my instructor rubbing her clit. She continue: "I want you to gently grab with your hands the soft dicks of the Ebony and Ginger and gently start to stroke it. Their beautiful dicks start growing in your hands, they are now fully erected, you feel its warmth in your hand. You hear them moaning with pleasure. While you stroking their dicks, you suddenly start to feel a pleasure feeling in your hard cock, you look down and you see the Blondie gently stroking your dick with her feet. Blondie ask you in sexy voice ' what about me?'. While you keep masturbating the two other ladies, you lean forward with your head and put Blondie's cock in your mouth. Her dick is soft, you blow her dick with great pleasure, she start to get hard in your mouth till she is fully erected".
Sucking a shemale cock is something I fantasize for years. Imagining sucking a blond shemale make me remember in one of my most favorite scene named "Shemale Blowjob Service" in which a young fan please Gia Darling (a beautiful blonde shemale) with an amazing long blowjob, scene is so authentic, and Gia get an orgasm in his mouth.
Jenny: "You continue to blow Blondie with passion, she gently grab your head with her hands and move it back and forward with her tempo, each time you manage to get more of dick inside of you till you finally got her entire cock in your mouth, at this instance she keep your head in place where your lips reach the base of her dick, her entire dick completely disappeared in your mouth".
I am so horny from imagining this moment, I am in the middle of the scene with three beautiful shemales, I give handjobs to the black and the redhead while the blond is fucking my mouth and stroking my dick with her bare foot. All three are moaning loudly with pleasure.
Jenny resume:"Blondie is getting close baby, her moaning is now in shorter interval and louder, She ask you to fuck her with your finger while blowing her dick. You stop masturbating Ebony and Ginger, they lie down on bed and start stroke each other boners. Blondie stop stroking your dick with her feet, she take off her skirt and said: 'I want to look into your eyes when I am coming', she spread her legs and wait with anticipation. You lube your middle finger with K-Y jelly and gently start rubbing Blondie's hole. You very gently start penetrating her ass, her hole is so tight! Being penetrated make her release a big moan. You slowly remove the finger and slowly insert it again, it now insert easily and deeply, you repeat this for couple of time till you get to fuck her with you finger. She is now moaning loudly with pleasure from being both fucked and blown on the same time".
My instructor continue :"Baby, Are you ready with our frozen load?, I think Blondie is ready". I pause the video and went naked to go to the freezer to bring a load of cum. I was so horny and hard that I felt like I am able to cum even without touching my dick. I went slowly not to swing my boner to not to accidentally come. I took one load of cum on a plate and went back carefully. I put the plate on the table and resume the video. My instructor resume :"Blondie start to tremble while you are fucking her hard with your finger and sucking her with passion! She look down to your face and mumble 'I am coming, I am coming...'. Now baby, take the frozen load and put it on your mouth, suck that load of cum imagining that it is Blondie's dick and the dissolved cum is her cum ejaculated into your mouth" .
I did exactly as told, I suck my frozen load of cum imagining a beautiful shemale is coming in my mouth, it was so hot, I was so hard while feeding on my cum. Jenny: "Imagine that Blondie is keep coming in your mouth while your load is dissolved, she is having an orgasm in your mouth, while you keep fingering her ass". I keep on sucking my cumsicle, on each suck - the dissolved cum that was in my mouth went down my throat and swallowed. "Did she taste good?" Jenny wink and smile. I smile to myself and swallowed the remaining cum that was in my mouth.
That was amazing. I loved it! I was so horny and hard with taste of cum in my mouth after eating a big load of mine knowing that Ebony and Ginger are waiting for me! I was so thrilled to discover what was about to come next... .
"Blondie lie on bed, she look tired but satisfied ,her dick is soft now, Ebony and Ginger on the other hand are rocket hard. This entire time they were masturbating each other while watching you swallowing Blondie. Ebony tease you and said 'Are you ready for more or you had enough?' ".
All this time I was so hard that I didn't touch myself from the fear that I will immediately come. Jenny resume: "I think you are..., Ebony stand up and slowly in sexy moves start approaching you, she is now standing above you, you are on your knees still having Blondie taste in your mouth. Ebony land her dick on your lips, you now see her dick is huge, you think her dick is too big for your mouth. Ebony say:'Don't worry baby it is not going there", you wonder what she mean by that. Ebony start stroking her dick, she gently flap her hose over your face with a flapping sound, she is hard, you notice a drop of pre-cum is hanging on her penis hole, 'I am going to paint your face with this hose".
Jenny give a big smile :"Baby, I think now would be a good time to bring our second load". The thought I am going to get myself a facial was surprising and kinky, all this time I thought that all three are going to come in my mouth but seem like Jenny have different plans. I pause the video and went thrilled to the fridge. I still had the texture and taste of cum in my mouth from the first shot, I took my second frozen load in a plate and returned excited to my seat, I was looking forward for what coming next.
I resume the video playback, Jenny continue, "Ebony continue to rub her dick on your face, you hear Ginger saying: 'Save a spot for me.". Ebony was ready and said 'I coming baby...".
Jenny continue to instruct me:"Baby, I want you to do exactly as i tell you, I want you to take our second load of frozen cum and place it on your forehead, lean back your head a little bit so the dissolved cum won't dropped on the floor, we don't want to lose any drop of our precious cum. Spread the dissolved cum on every spot that ebony is about to come on your face, OK? lets start...".
Jenny: "Ebony take her huge dick and use it like garden hose to ejaculate her cum on your face. Beautiful white cum start to emerge from her dick, the contrast between her lovely black dick and her white sperm is beautiful, her cum almost doesn't have pre-cum which make it even whiter, it is very thick. Her first rope of cum land on your forehead, it looks like a generous amount of quality face cream placed on your skin. Ebony continue to moan and keep masturbating, she move her cum hose to your middle of your face and release two huge ropes of cum between your eyes and on your nose, these big ropes are too big to stay your nose and slowly start to slide on both sides of your nose and under your eyes. Her fourth and fifth shot land on your lips and chin, Ebony continue to moan and ejaculate two more nasty strings of cum on your left and right cheeks.
During the entire time that Jenny describe for me how Ebony is painting my face, I am following her exact instructions, I placed my frozen load on my forehead, in seconds it start to dissolved, I spread the dissolved cum on forehead, between my eyes, on my nose, below my eyes, my lips, chin and two cheeks. I manage to spread thin layer of cum over my entire face, my face was completely cover like women that just got a face cream mask in beauty Salon. It was so kinky, I still had taste of cum from my first load and my face felt like it just got a monster facial from Peter North. I couldn't resist and I licked a bit of cum that was on my lips.
Jenny continue: "Your face is covered with Ebony white cum . Ebony release last moan and say:" That felt so good". Ginger and Blondie get up from bed to take a closer look on the peace of art that Ebony just left on your face. They both seem to be impressed from Ebony job. Ginger's dick got hard from watching Ebony's frosting on your face. You notice her balls are huge, you wonder to yourself when was the last time she came. Ginger smile at you and said 'I hope you have place for dessert'".
After eating my first load and get a facial with the second, I was excited for what come next. Jenny:" Ginger is horny for too long now, she start feeling aches in her balls, she needed to get loss. Ginger put one of her big shaved balls in your mouth, you start to suck it and think about the hot cum it has inside. Sucking on Ginger's ball seem to make her relief, you lube your middle finger and start gently massaging her hole, her dick start humping, she slowly rise herself to get her second ball in your mouth, you start on sucking her second ball and gently start penetrating her ass with your middle finger, that make her release a big moan, a drop of cum emerge from her dick while you fingering her ass, Ginger begin to moan in ecstasy, you look up and see in her eyes she is about to explode, she look back at you and say 'Open your mouth baby and put your tongue out'".
Jenny smile and say :"Baby, I think we need our third load". I pause the video again, went to the fridge. I walk slowly not to drop cum from my drench face. I took my third frozen load in a plate and return to my place.
I resume the video playback, Jenny continue: "Ginger start rubbing her penis head on your tongue and moan loudly: 'I coming baby...' ".Then Jenny instruct me: "Baby, as before, I want you to do exactly as I tell you, I want you to take our third load of frozen cum and place it on your tongue, rub it against it to simulate Ginger's dick rubbing on your tongue. With your tongue create a spoon shape to keep all the dissolved cum on it. Keep it in your mouth and swallow only when Ginger tell you to, OK? lets start.
Jenny: "Ginger is stroking her dick while rubbing her penis head on your tongue, you are waiting like a good boy till a thick rope of cum start to emerge on the tip of your tongue, it is warm with a thick texture, before you realize, a second and third string of cum is shot in your mouth, the front of your tongue got completely white from a gooey cum. Ginger continue to stroke her dick and release three more ropes, cum start to leak to the back of your tongue till your entire tongue is cover. The fresh smell of cum fill your nose. Blondie and Ebony join Ginger, all three are standing above you looking at your loaded mouth and face. Ginger say:'You look so hot baby, feed on my cum, drink every last little swimmer for me' ".
During the entire time that Jenny describe how Ginger loading my tongue with her cum, I am following her exact instructions, I placed my frozen load on my tongue and gently rub it against my tongue, slowly it start to dissolved in my spoon shaped tongue. I repeat doing that till the entire cum fill my tongue and mouth while my face is drench from a previous load. I was so hot, I looked at my dick, it was so hard like it about to explode. I kept savoring on the cum for few more seconds and I took a big gulp.
The video continue with further instruction on cumming and eating fresh load, yet as I note at the beginning, this is not something I plan to do. I pause the video with the picture of Jenny smiling, I said to her :"Baby, my stop is here". I look for a while on this cute chick which just got me into eating two loads of cum and getting myself a facial. It was hot.
As I have done on previous times, I cool myself before getting to orgasm. I close the computer and went to take a shower, there I washed the cum from my face and the taste of cum from my mouth, only then I masturbated myself to orgasm.

2020.10.02 10:35 feminineandflighty He Broke Up With Me for Not Going 50/50 - A Lesson

So, F [26] was dating a M also [26] for six months. He makes slightly more than me at £55,000 and me at £50,000. However when it came to dinners (which HE always suggested because HE liked constant fine dining) they'd be this awkwardness when the bill came. I have never paid for dinners and don't expect to. He would heave and sigh and pull out his wallet - which would make me uncomfortable, but I'd still not pay.
This week he messaged me to 'discuss' the 'inequality' in our relationship. His arguments were as follows:
Honestly, I am quite ruthless. I listened politely and 'mmhmmm' along. I then gave him 24 hours to re-think his position. He did not and he said 'he doesn't think this relationship will work'.
You're damn right it won't.
Ladies, here is my greatest takeaway from this. Men are becoming good at being emotionally manipulative, especially when it comes to 50/50. I asked him if he'd like to go 50/50 on my nails, my monthly hair salon trips, my gym membership, my chemical peel treatments, my expensive make-up collection - all the things he benefits for FREE from me. He said 'but I don't expect you to do those things'. Okay, but if I wasn't looking my best when we met, and certainly during the relationship I'm sure he'd have had something to say.
He also stated that he knows he 'can't compete' with some of the men I could be dating in London in terms of what he earns, but he can 'beat' them in kindness and 'acts of service'. What this man was doing here, was using being a 'good guy' as a bargaining chip to strengthen his position. He constantly would say men who spoil their women probably 'treat them like shit, and cheat' because he didn't want to confront the fact men can be providers and be great husband's too.
Moral of the story: do not compromise. I have a great career (set to see six figures next year!), great friends, I take VERY good care of myself, well-educated, good network - I will not be splitting with any man.
What are your thoughts?

2020.09.25 23:50 coy-coyote [HOLIER THAN THOU] A Camel And A Needle

Metaplot: [REDACTED PER ID]
Contact - 'Kimberly Cagliari' - 3/1 - Rosicrucian Zealot
Female / Human / 30's / Celibate / Preferred Payment: Shadowrunner Job
'Kimmy' Cagliari has taken a vow not unlike a Jesuit priest; she will commit any sin, tell any lie, and take any life when so doing will serve the greater glory of God. This appears, to most, to simply be ridding the world of wealthy individuals, though her machinations and support network of magical contacts seem to allude to a deeper connection to other organizations, and is known to consort with the Order of St. Sylvester and other religious entities in her personal crusade. Known for getting close to her subjects, Cagliari is an expert infiltrator and PsyOps manipulator, and rumored to be a powerful mystic adept in her own right. Gear Contact: Talismonger Power: Side Business [Armor and Clothing]
Background
This is the introductory run to the metaplot series, testing runners ability to access the preliminary outlay of a luxury property with minimal security staffing and interventions. Runners faced difficulties in scheduling, keeping out of exposure, and looking for avenues for insertion of the objects they had received from their employers.
Meet
Runners met in the 'Our Lady of the Snows' Catholic monastery, in northern Snohomish. 'Sylv' [Kitten] had their anthrodrone LOTO'd by an aggressive technomancer located somewhere in the church, who then proceeded to manipulate the drone's reboot procedures while the drone was locked out of access. Sylv opted to wipe the drone's memory and isolate the malicious code on a datachip with the assistance of Weasel, unfortunately isolating the prior history of the drone's memory up to that point as well inside the bombed, encrypted rootkit upgrades bootstrapped to the drone's pilot. No other players encountered difficulties, opting to leave explosive weaponry and forbidden and restricted equipment in their vehicles.
Run
Players were given a mission to place up to 6 icons in the path of Ms. O'Leary's daily routine. Players did not opt to assense or psychometrize the statues before hand, and missed the 'easy deadline' by a day from mis-ordering placement of relics.
Players conducted reconnaissance and surveillance in all spectrums, assessing security threats of active magical detection spells being cast at intervals; on-site live patrol and security response; concealed host security measures inside the data host; bound spirit assistance; warded security rooms; extra concealed sensor tags in trees and natural camouflage.
Weasel was nearly killed by a data bomb exploding during recovery of the subject's itinerary from their commlink. Firstaid assistance was rendered by Sylv. Orca infiltrated the property twice, sneaking past sensor buoys and first tampering a generator, then climbing up 4 stories to the master bedroom's window to leave an object on the windowsill.
Raptor opted to assist by leaving a relic in a happenstance manner outside the doors of the salon Ms. O'Leary was visiting in a discrete manner. Sylv opted to bribe the deliveryman of her favorite restaurant to include a statue in a bag of food for her.
Ms. O'Leary suffered her mental break on the fourth day of exposure, instead opting to escape Seattle for a vacation somewhere... far away.
Aftermath
No significant aftermath; exposure on players minimal and unlinkable to any allegible felony activity.
Expenses
3,500 Nuyen bribe: sushi restaurant employee; 1800 nuyen, workspace rental

2020.09.19 00:42 lisagreenhouse Gary Michael Hilton, the National Forest Serial Killer, is known to have murdered four people. But his crimes and travels make it hard to believe there weren’t earlier victims. Are there more waiting to be discovered?

Who is Gary Michael Hilton?
Gary Michael Hilton, sometimes referred to as the National Forest Serial Killer, was a drifter who murdered at least four hikers in and around national forests in Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina between 2005 and 2008.
Hilton was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison in January 2008 for the murder of Meredith Emerson, 24. After that conviction, investigators across the country began looking into unsolved cases that were similar to Emerson’s, and Hilton was charged with and found guilty of three more killings. In 2011, he received the death penalty in a Florida court for the slaying of Cheryl Dunlap, 46. In March 2012, he plead guilty to the murders of John Bryant, 80, and Irene Bryant, 84 and a North Carolina court sentenced him to four consecutive life sentences.
Emerson, Dunlap, and the Bryants shared no specific victimology, instead it appears he chose them at random when he needed money. Investigators agree that his were crimes of opportunity, and they believe Hilton may have committed more murders across the southeast United States in the years before his four known victims were killed.
Hilton was born November 26, 1946. He had an unstable home life and varied criminal record that stretched from childhood until he was arrested for Emerson’s murder at the age of 61. In 1959, when he was just 13, Hilton reportedly shot his stepfather in a jealous rage over his mother. His stepfather didn’t press charges, but Hilton did spend some time in a mental hospital after the shooting.
At 17, Hilton joined the army, and he served from 1964 through 1967, including a tour in West Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1967 after he had been hospitalized for hearing voices and diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Hilton was married at least three times, but none of his marriages were long—the longest was just two years. He isn’t believed to have any children. His third wife was a security officer at Stone Mountain Park, a 3,000 acre park near Atlanta that offers camping, hiking, wooded trails, lakes, and family attractions, including the massive peak at its center that is carved with the likenesses of Confederate soldiers.
Hilton loved the outdoors. He hiked, camped, and frequently lived in forests and mountains around the south and southeast United States. He loved dogs, too, and had a dog named Dandy (sometimes reported as a golden retriever, other times described as red in color).
He never had steady employment; after leaving the army, he worked as a chauffeur in Florida from 1970 to 1972, and he was arrested in 1995 for stealing books he was hired to sell from a door-to-door sales company. From 1997 to 2007, he worked off and on handing out advertisements and doing odd jobs for a Gwinnett County, GA, siding company, but he permanently lost that job when he threatened to kill the company owner if he didn’t pay him $10,000.
Hilton also had ongoing legal troubles. He was convicted of a DUI in Florida in 1973; in 1983, he was convicted for carrying an unlicensed gun and a drug charge; he was found guilty of theft and marijuana possession in 1987; and he plead guilty to 21 counts of solicitation in 1995.
Samuel Rael, an attorney and filmmaker in Atlanta, admitted that in 1995 Hilton helped him develop the plot for the movie Deadly Run. The movie is about a man who stalks, hunts, and murders women in the woods, a storyline that has similarities to Hilton’s crimes. Rael had defended him in court multiple times since the mid-1980s for crimes ranging from arson and trespassing to solicitation of false charitable donations. Rael said Hilton, whom he considered a consultant on the project, came up with the idea of the main character releasing women into the woods to be hunted like prey and that he also helped select that cast and found the cabin in the woods near Cleveland, Georgia, where much of the movie was filmed. Meredith Emerson’s remains were found approximately 30 miles from that same cabin 13 years later. Investigators have said that Hilton was not considered a suspect in any murders or disappearances during the time the movie was being filmed.

Confirmed Victims
Victims are listed in the order of their disappearances and murders. However, his final victim, Meredith Emerson, was the first to be linked to Hilton. His implication in her murder helped solve the others.
Irene Bryant, 84, and John Bryant, 80, disappeared after driving 20 miles from their home to hike and look at fall colors in North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest on October 21, 2007. The couple had been married for 58 years and loved traveling, hiking, and being outdoors. Their active lifestyle meant that they were sometimes hard to reach, and it took time for their neighbors and family to realize they were missing. Their son Bob reported them missing on November 2. He drove from his home in Texas to North Carolina to help search for his parents and discovered their vehicle at a trailhead parking lot. Investigators subpoenaed telephone and financial records and discovered that Irene had tried to call 911 around 4 p.m. on October 21 but the call didn’t go through. They couldn’t confirm whether the call failed due to lack of service or interference by another person. Financial records showed a bank withdrawal from their account at 7 p.m. the day after Irene attempted the 911 call. Security footage at the bank in Ducktown, Tennessee, 25 miles away from their vehicle, showed a slender man man in a hooded raincoat using the Bryant’s ATM card. Investigators couldn’t identify the person, but it was neither of the Bryants.
Irene’s body was found on November 9, covered with leaves and sticks, just 100 yards from where the couple’s vehicle was parked. She had been killed by a blow to the head and her arms and legs appeared to have also been beaten. Investigators speculated that her attacker had lain in wait on the trail or in the woods just beyond the parking lot.
John’s skeletal remains weren’t found until February 5, 2008 when a hunter stumbled across them.
On October 26, 2007, Hilton was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy while trespassing on private hunting land. Hilton tells the deputy he’s a paratrooper on field maneuvers, and, when asked if he’s carrying any weapons, he shows the officer an expandable police baton. The officer checks for open warrants and then lets him go. However, Hilton did have an open warrant for a minor 1972 offense in Miami, and he should have been detained.
In March 2012, Hilton plead guilty to murdering the Bryants, and he admitted to camping out in the parking lot, scouting for victims. Hilton admitted he had kidnapped Bryant from the parking lot, drove him to the Nantahala National Forest, walked him 30 feet down an embankment, and shot him in the head. It’s believed Hilton wasn’t certain he could control both victims at once, so he chose to kill Irene at the location and then use her death to intimidate and scare John into cooperating and giving him the couple’s ATM PIN number.
In the days before the Bryants’ murders, other hikers reported seeing, talking to, and even photographing and confronting Hilton in the Pisgah National Forest in the area where the Bryants were murdered. Along with pleading guilty of ambushing and killing the Bryants, Hilton also plead to robbery and firearms offenses in their case. He again accepted a plea deal to avoid the death penalty and was remanded to serve four additional life sentences consecutively with the life sentence already handed down for Emerson’s murder.
The Bryants are Hilton’s first known victims, although he was sentenced in their cases after being tried for his later crimes.
Cheryl Hodges Dunlap, 46, was a mother of two grown sons and a nurse and Sunday school teacher, She was last seen alive on December 1, 2007. She had gone hiking alone in Apalachicola National Forest in the Florida panhandle just outside Tallahassee at about 9 a.m. Friends reported her missing after she failed to show up to teach her Sunday school class on December 2 or arrive at work on Monday morning, December 3. Three days after she disappeared her car was found with a flat tire, parked on the shoulder of Highway 319 just outside of the national forest. A search of the area revealed nothing of use. However, an investigation into her digital footprint discovered bank withdrawals.
A little over a week after she went missing, authorities released surveillance photos of a man successfully using Dunlap’s ATM card to withdraw money on December 2, 3, and 4, the three days immediately following her disappearance. Police could not identify him because he was wearing a rubber mask, gloves, and hat. Detectives staked out the ATM machine for the next week, but the man never returned.
Dunlap’s decapitated remains were discovered near Bloxham Cutoff Road in the Apalachicola National Forest on December 15 by hunters who noticed the presence of buzzards. Because her head and hands were missing, it took a DNA sample to confirm that the remains were hers.
Hilton was proven to be in the area when and where Dunlap disappeared because a forestry agent had run his vehicle tag number through the police database on December 7. After Dunlap’s body was found, a hunter also reported coming into contact with Hilton in the forest—driving a white van, wielding a knife and appearing disheveled or homeless. The hunter said he’d warned Hilton that the woods was a bad place to be during hunting season. This interaction allowed the hunter to identify Hilton in a photo lineup. A forestry agent had also questioned Hilton on November 17, 2007 and run his white van’s tag number through a database to ensure it wasn’t stolen. On December 28, another forestry agent interacted with Hilton in Osceola National Forest, about 160 miles from where Dunlap was last seen. Those sightings proved Hilton had been in the area before and then left after Dunlap’s murder. The final item of proof was one of Dunlap’s boots, which Hilton was attempting to discard in the dumpster with Emerson’s belongings when he was initially arrested.
Investigators believed Hilton kidnapped Dunlap from the Leon Sinks Geological Area of Apalachicola National Forest, where friends said she had mentioned going to read a book. He likely kept her alive for a few days in order to get money from her ATM card, finally killing her. Investigators say he burned her head and hands in his campfire, then left her vehicle by the road after puncturing the tire with his police baton. There was no physical evidence tying him to the crime, but investigators were able to recover audio tapes on which Hilton had recorded himself talking crudely about women and referencing killing women and hiding things. He said he was a sociopath who could disassociate from the act of murder.
Hilton was indicted on Thursday, February 28, 2008 for Dunlap’s murder, kidnapping, and two counts of grand theft. He was found guilty by a unanimous jury in February 2011 and sentenced to death. He unsuccessfully appealed the conviction.
Dunlap was Hilton’s third known victim; he was sentenced in her case after being tried and found guilty for murdering his last-known victim, Meredith Emerson.
Meredith Emerson, 24, was last seen alive on New Year’s Day 2008, with her dog, a black Labrador retriever mix named Ella. The pair had left home in Buford, Georgia, to hike one of their favorite trails on Blood Mountain. The location is the highest peak in Georgia’s section of the Appalachian Trail and is located on the border of Lumpkin and Union counties inside the Blood Mountain Wilderness and the Chattahoochee National Forest.
Concerned after she didn’t return home, Emerson’s friends and boyfriend reported her absence to local police. She was classified as an overdue hiker. The next day, friends and authorities searched the area where Emerson and Ella had been hiking but did not find either of them. A winter storm moved in that day, and authorities had to halt the search.
After her disappearance made news, witnesses came forward to claim that they’d seen her hiking with an older man, approximately 60 years old with a red dog, on a spur trail that connects the Appalachian Trail to the Byron Herbert Reece Parking Lot. One caller was a former police officer. He reported that while hiking he’d discovered a police baton, water bottles, sunglasses, a barrette, and a dog leash and treats scattered over an area of disturbed and scuffed ground. He had seen an older man with a police baton walking with a younger woman minutes before finding the items, and he recognized the leash as the one the young woman had been holding. At first, he’d thought they were father and daughter, but the scattered belongings and evidence of a struggle concerned him. While there, he talked with another group of hikers who had seen the man hiding in the woods, but they were unable to locate him after a short search. They gathered the scattered items and left them at a local store, but they didn’t call police at the time. The next day after seeing a report on TV about Emerson’s disappearance, the former officer called investigators to report what he’d seen and found the day before.
Also on January 2, John Tabor, a former employer of Hilton’s, called police to let them know Hilton matched the description of the man seen with Emerson on the trail. He said Hilton had called him a few hours before and had apologized for acting erratically and violently toward him, asked him for money, and told him he was near Blood Mountain. He’d asked Tabor to leave him a check at a business Tabor owned, but he never came to collect the check. Investigators noted that Tabor hadn’t called them immediately to inform them of Hilton’s similarity to the suspect or his proximity to the possible kidnapping.
Police also recovered surveillance images of Hilton unsuccessfully attempting to use Emerson’s ATM card. Investigators had hope that Emerson was still alive and they were now sure she was with Hilton, so they disseminated Hilton’s DMV photo to the media.
On January 4, another witness called police to report that he had encountered an older man and young woman camping near a white van. The witness was driving a lawn care truck when he got it stuck in a stream. He asked the older man for help, but he’d refused. The witness said it seemed like the man was trying to keep him away from the van. When the witness called police dispatch to ask for help getting his vehicle unstuck, the man quickly packed up and left the area in a seeming rush.
That same day, Ella was found wandering in a grocery store parking lot in the town of Cumming, Georgia, about 60 miles away from Emerson’s last-known whereabouts. Investigators also discovered bloody clothing, bloody men’s boots, and Emerson’s purse and wallet in a dumpster across the street from the store where Ella was located. A boot, later confirmed to belong to Hilton’s third victim, Cheryl Dunlap, was also recovered from the dumpster.
Later that evening, a witness called 911 to report that Hilton—whom he recognized as the suspect in Emerson’s disappearance from news reports—was at a local gas station cleaning out a white van. Police arrived and prevented Hilton from using a vacuum cleaner and bleach on the van’s interior; they also discovered bloody clothing and blankets he had attempted to discard in the gas station trash receptacles. Blood in the vehicle was later matched to Emerson, and Hilton was charged with her murder.
During almost five hours of interrogations, Hilton admitted that Emerson fought back against him when he attacked her, yelling and using her martial arts skills to fend him off (she’d earned a blue belt in aikido and was posthumously awarded a black belt). He said that she almost got away, but that he was finally able to subdue her when she lost her footing and stumbled. He said he’d chosen to attack her because she was a woman, and that they’d hiked together for a while before she outpaced him. He then stopped and waited for her down the trail, planning to rob her of her ATM card when she was returning to her vehicle. He admitted to taking Emerson from the parking lot in his van, returning at her request a few minutes later to pick up Ella, who had initially been left behind. He drove her to multiple banks and unsuccessfully attempted to use her ATM; police believed she was intentionally giving him wrong PIN numbers to buy time. Unfortunately, no one at the banks or law enforcement noticed the failed transactions or attempted use of Emerson’s ATM cards until January 4.
Eventually Hilton gave up and drove Emerson to a secluded location where, for three days, she continued to give him incorrect ATM PIN codes in an apparent attempt to give rescuers time to find her. Hilton told investigators that he tired of waiting for the correct PIN number, so he told Emerson he was taking her home; however, he admitted that he knew he couldn’t release her since she’d seen his face and vehicle and knew so much about him. Instead, while she was tied to a tree, he hit her over the head repeatedly with a car jack handle to kill her, and then he decapitated her. He covered her body with leaves, then drove to another wooded area more than an hour away, where he discarded her head. He said he was unable to kill Ella and decided to let her go. Disturbingly, in that same interview, when asked about whether it was hard for him to kill Emerson, Hilton stated, “It was hard … you gotta remember we had spent several good days together.”
Hilton offered to lead investigators to Emerson’s body if they’d agree to remove the death penalty option. An autopsy confirmed Hilton’s story: her cause of death was officially listed as blunt force trauma to the head, and she’d been decapitated postmortem.
He plead guilty to Emerson’s murder on January 30, 2008, and he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
The case was in the news again in 2010 when a writer for Hustler magazine submitted a request for crime scene photos for use in an article about Emerson’s kidnapping and murder. A judge blocked the request, preventing the Georgia Bureau of Investigation from releasing "any and all photographs, visual images or depictions of Meredith Emerson which show Emerson in an unclothed or dismembered state.” The Georgia House also passed The Meredith Emerson Memorial Privacy Act, preventing “gruesome crime scene photos from being publicly released or disseminated.” The Act, House Bill 1322, stops the release of all images in which victims of crimes appear “nude, bruised, bloodied or in a broken state with open wounds, a state of dismemberment or decapitation.”
Hilton’s involvement in Emerson’s kidnapping and murder drew the attention of investigators in other states. While she is believed to be his last victim, the successful investigation into her case resulted in his guilty pleas and sentencing for three other murders. A series of other unsolved crimes is also being investigated for ties to Hilton.

Possible Victims
Melissa Witt, 19, disappeared from the parking lot of a local bowling alley in Fort Smith, Arkansas on December 1, 1994. On January 13, 1995, her body was found by hunters in a rural area of the same county from where she disappeared. She was naked, and her remains were near a rock that’s been described as headstone-like. Her clothing was never located. Some investigators believe that there are similarities between Witt’s disappearance and death and those of Hilton’s known victims.
Judy Smith, 50, is considered a possible victim of Hilton’s because her remains were found near the location where Hilton would bludgeon Irene Bryant a decade later. Smith was last confirmed to have been seen by her husband, Jeffrey, at a Philadelphia hotel on April 10, 1997. The couple flew from their home in Newton, Massachusetts to Philadelphia the day before so that Jeffrey could attend a work conference. After arriving at the airport, Judy discovered she had left her identification at home and would not be able to board the plane. She returned home to retrieve her ID and took a later flight, meeting Jeffrey at their hotel. She planned to go sightseeing while Jeffrey was attending the conference, and Jeffrey confirmed she’d been alive and in their room that next morning. That evening, after the conference meetings had ended for the day, Jeffery could not find Judy. He searched for her and tried to report her missing around midnight, but investigators told him he needed to wait 24 hours.
During the ensuing investigation, there were a number of sightings of a woman matching Judy’s description in and around Philadelphia, several of which seemed to describe a person experiencing psychological problems or acting disoriented or disturbed. Other possible sightings were of a woman matching Judy’s description riding the bus, shopping at a mall, and sitting outside a gourmet grocery store. The Smith family found some of the descriptions and sightings credible.
On September 7, 1997, about five months after Smith was last confirmed to have been seen, hunters in the Pisgah National Forest about 9 miles from Asheville, North Carolina discovered scattered bones around a shallow grave. Some clothing and personal effects were also located. Cut marks and punctures found on the ribs and clothing suggested the victim had been stabbed. The remains were confirmed to be those of Judy Smith. Strangely, the clothes she was discovered wearing were not any she was known to have owned or reported by witnesses, and the family has no explanation for why or how she got to or was in Asheville. Later reports found that people in the Asheville area had seen Judy or a woman who resembled her. The sightings were deemed credible, but no one claimed to have seen Judy with anyone else. Money and jewelry was found near Judy’s body and belongings, so robbery was ruled out as a motive. Investigators came to believe Smith traveled to Asheville voluntarily, but they’re unsure of why or what happened to her while there. Hilton has been suggested as a possible suspect, but investigators have not publicly linked him to Smith’s case or named as a suspect.
Levi Frady, 11, was abducted from Little Mill Road in Forsyth County, Georgia, on October 22, 1997. The next day his remains were found partially submerged in a rainwater-filled pit in Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area in Dawson County, Georgia. He had been shot three times, once in the chest and twice in the head. Investigators consider Frady’s case open and active. Some have hinted Hilton is considered a suspect, but he has not been publicly named.
In April 1998, Jason Knapp, 20, disappeared. He was a student at Clemson University, and he was last known to have been seen by his roommate at around 10:30 p.m. on April 11, watching a movie at their residence. His vehicle was found on April 21 at Table Rock State Park in Pickens, South Carolina. The area is about 30 miles from the university and is very rugged. Investigators found a Wendy’s restaurant receipt inside the vehicle dated April 12 at 1:30 p.m. It is believed he drove to the park on April 12. He had also withdrawn $20 from his bank account that day; his bank cards, including an ATM card, were never found. The area around his vehicle showed no signs of struggle or foul play, and it is unknown whether he drove to the location alone. Searchers canvassed the area around his vehicle for two weeks and found nothing of interest.
Patrice Endres, 38, disappeared from her hair salon in Cumming, Georgia, between 11:30 a.m. and noon on April 15, 2004. She vanished during a gap of about 12 minutes between clients. The front door of the salon was unlocked and the cash register was empty, but there was money in her purse. Her lunch was in the microwave and her vehicle was parked at the salon.
Her skeletal remains were found in December 2005 behind a church about 10 miles from her salon. A woman came forward with a description of a man in a white van parked in front of the salon, but she later recanted the story. Serial killer Jeremy Brian Jones admitted to killing Endres and dumping her body in Sweetwater Creek in Douglas County, but authorities ruled him out as a suspect after her remains were found 70 miles from that location and when he couldn’t provide any additional information that wasn’t in the public record. Authorities looked at Hilton’s possible involvement, but they say he is no longer considered a suspect. There is no information as to why investigators have ruled him out.
Rossana Miliani, 29, lived in Miami, Florida, and disappeared while vacationing in Cherokee, North Carolina. She was last confirmed to have been seen at about noon on December 7, 2005, in the hotel where she was staying. She called her father and told him she was going hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Some reports say she was spotted in Bryson City, NC, where she rented a storage space, shortly before disappearing. Miliani is reported to have bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, but no details are available about whether she was on medication or if she was experiencing any issues at the time of her disappearance.
On the two-year anniversary of her disappearance, a clerk at a local store read an article about Miliani and called investigators to report that she’d sold a backpack or bag, possibly a sleeping bag according to some sources, to Miliani and a man who claimed to be a traveling preacher who visited campsites around the Appalachian Trail. According to the clerk, the man was about 60 years old, had hair greying at the temples and may have been wearing a hair piece because his hair looked unusual. The clerk claimed that Miliani appeared to be nervous.
A private investigator working on the case released a sketch of the unidentified man in June 2009. The man resembles Hilton, and he’s considered a possible suspect. Neither Miliani nor any of her belongings, including luggage and a camera, have been found; no money has been withdrawn from her bank account since her disappearance, but a deposit was made on December 31, nearly three weeks after her disappearance. No further information is available about that deposit.
Some sources say Hilton is known to have stolen and unsuccessfully tried to use Miliani’s bank card, but I was unable to find official corroboration of those reports.
A fisherman found the remains of Michael Scot Louis, 27, dismembered and stuffed in plastic garbage bags, in the Tomoka River at Ormond Beach, Tomoka State Park, Florida on December 6, 2007. His torso and legs were recovered, but his head has never been found. Louis was last known to have been seen on November 21 or 22, 2007, but when his remains were found 16 days later, the autopsy estimated he had only been dead for two to seven days. It’s unclear where he was or who he may have been with during the days he was unaccounted for. Days after his disappearance, his Firebird was found parked unusually far from his apartment in the apartment complex’s parking lot in South Daytona, Florida, with the keys still in the ignition and his dirty laundry and guitars inside.
Hilton was officially ruled out as a suspect after DNA testing did not implicate him, but some thought he should remain on the list as a potential suspect. In January 2018, Nelci Tetley, 67, was arrested for shooting to death and dismembering her then-boyfriend, Jeffrey Albertsman, 55. It was discovered that she had possibly also dated Louis, although she denied knowing him or having a relationship with him, and she’s been named as a suspect in his case.
University of Georgia student Cayle Bywater disappeared from Athens, Georgia on December 29, 2007. She was reported missing after neighbors became concerned when her dog was seen running loose outside her home. Meredith Emerson would be kidnapped three days later from Vogel State Park, about 80 miles north of Athens.
On January 11, Bywater’s body was found in an Athens lake. An autopsy listed drowning as her cause of death, but there’s disagreement about how she came to be in the lake. There were no traces of illegal drugs or alcohol in her system, but she had been prescribed medication to treat a mental disorder, reported by some agencies as bipolar disorder. The autopsy also found a previously undiagnosed heart defect, but that could not be proven to have played a part in her death.
A photograph taken by an undisclosed individual the day she was last seen alive shows Bywater in Memorial Park walking her dog on leash. Witnesses claim to have seen someone matching Bywater’s appearance walking a dog in the park near the lake where her body was later found, and some said she appeared to be disoriented or chasing the dog. No signs of foul play were discovered on her body or at the scene, but her family insists she did not wander off or commit suicide. In a news article dated January 8, 2008, (https://www.savannahnow.com/article/20080108/news/301089882) her family was concerned that she may have been kidnapped by someone who saw her in a disoriented or confused state and took advantage of the situation. That same news article mentions the kidnapping of Meredith Emerson by Gary Michael Hilton but quotes an investigator as saying the local police department and Georgia Bureau of Investigation did not consider the cases related at that point. It’s unknown if Hilton is now or was ever considered a suspect in Bywater’s case.
Are there more? There are dozens of unsolved cases of missing and murdered people in the areas where Hilton was known to or may have traveled or lived. Someone put together this Google Map detailing known and possible victims of Hilton: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1v-4PyOHDjE17GhkF6ofEvFWtLes&hl=en&gl=us&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&z=5&ll=34.77220536527494%2C-83.37685848300629 . It’s a very interesting rabbit hole. I’m unsure who created the map or what criteria they used to include possible victims. If anyone on this sub has information about the creation of this map, please let me know and I’ll include more details.

What Don’t We Know? Discussion and Theories
Knowing what we do about Hilton and the crimes for which he was convicted, it’s hard to believe that Emerson, Dunlap, and the Bryants are his only victims. Investigators have pointed out that it’s rare for a serial killer to start killing in their 60s, and Hilton’s crimes seem to be the work of a confident killer. His lack of victimology—targeting victims based on opportunity rather than sticking to a certain type of person—and his large geographic footprint, transient lifestyle, lack of family and friends, and remote hunting grounds all point to the possibility that he’s been active for a lot longer than the short spree of four known victims.
There are so many missing people and unsolved homicides in the southeast corner of the United States that it’s not hard to think Hilton may be responsible for some of them.
What are your thoughts or theories?

A note of thanks: u/cspach2005 invited me to do this write-up on Hilton for an upcoming podcast on www.disturbedpodcast.com. They covered my previous write-up on Timothy Bindner (https://www.reddit.com/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/g2mh3i/hes_been_a_suspect_in_the_disappearances_of_at/) in this podcast, https://www.disturbedpodcast.com/bindne, so I was thrilled to contribute again. I’ll add a link to the podcast episode on Hilton once it’s done.

2020.09.14 18:14 SherlockBeaver Disappeared: Deanne Hastings My Leading Theory

In more than 75% of homicides, the victim knows their killer; nearly 30% of homicide perpetrators are family members. Among women who are murdered, more than half are murdered by their intimate partner. The force of emotions that exist in familial and romantic relationships are the most powerful that people experience in their lifetimes. Even what appear to be the closest of marriages and the most respectable of families have been known to experience fatal violence going all the way back to Cain and Abel.
This review of Deanne Hasting’s case takes a very close look at the actions and words of Deanne’s fiancé at the time she disappeared. Hopefully another review of the timeline and supporting facts will help lead us to what happened to Deanne. I rely most heavily on the information provided in interviews with Deanne's closest relatives from the ID Disappeared program (Season 8, episode 13 “The Long Way Home”) and The Vanished Podcast Episode 44, because it is the information of those who knew Deanne best or were the closest to Deanne when she disappeared, in their own words that we can listen to for ourselves.
Background
Deanne Hastings (maiden name Crider) was born 2/27/1980 in Pahrump, Nevada. She was a thirty-five year-old mother of three at the time she disappeared from Spokane, Washington on November 4, 2015. Deanne has a history of bipolar disorder, going missing and even attempted suicide. This webpage offers some real insight into Deanne’s struggles as well as an honest and loving tribute from an artist who was Deanne’s longtime friend and more.
Just months before Deanne vanished this seemingly final time, she had been out of touch with all of her friends and family for 6 days. A mostly redacted copy of a June 12, 2015 police incident report I obtained that was initiated by Deanne's eldest son, Hayden states the following:
"Hayden Green called Crime Check on June 12, 2015 at 20:38 to report that he hasn't heard from his mom, Deanne Hastings (listed Deanne Crider), since 6/9/15. Hayden has checked with other friends and family and no one has heard from her, not even her live in boyfriend Mike Tibbetts."
That case was closed when Deanne returned home on June 15, 2015. Apparently no search was conducted, nor was any media attention brought to Deanne’s disappearance on that occasion. Why not? Mike Tibbetts was Deanne’s live-in boyfriend when she went missing in June but apparently Mike was not as concerned then as he was in November.
Deanne and Mike became engaged around two months following her return from that episode and around two months before she disappeared. Did this change in their relationship status affect Mike’s actions in November? In his ID Disappeared interview Mike Tibbetts says: “In her past she would leave for a couple days or different times like that. She would respond here and there to texts and stuff.” Mike has been through this with Deanne before. Does Mike know where Deanne went during the times she disappeared before? According to Deanne’s artist friend, many times she would run to him wherever he was living, or he would come to where she was and they would hide from the world in a hotel. Apparently some of the times like this time, Deanne wandered the streets and made friends with strangers.
This time something kept Deanne from ever coming back to the people who loved her. Deanne had a long history of disappearing and of “episodes” where her mother says in her ID Disappeared interview that she sometimes didn’t even recognize her own daughter and Deanne’s brother Carson also describes Deanne as being like a different person during those times, full of foul and hurtful language. Unfortunately, these episodes had been occurring since Deanne’s later teenage years regardless of being on or off of any medication. Like many sufferers of bipolar disorder, Deanne clearly had a difficult time getting the right dose or combination of medications.
Although her brother Carson and Mike Tibbets refer to “the insurance” and “the insurance company” in their ID Disappeared interviews, the fact is that Deanne was on Medicaid due to her low income and other factors. One of the “credit” cards a person of interest in this case, Randy Riley, was caught using of Deanne’s was not a credit card according to police, but rather her EBT (food stamp) card which he used at a WinCo grocery store. Perhaps they did not wish to cause shame to Deanne (the only shame is that Deanne was denied her medication), but Mike Tibbetts states in his interview on ID Disappeared that he had offered to pay cash for Deanne’s medication so that she could have the preferred one and Deanne was “told” [by her caseworker?] that if they did that, Deanne would be dropped from “insurance coverage”. No one is dropped from private insurance coverage for not using their benefits and paying cash instead. When you go to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription, you will be charged the full price in cash unless you present an insurance card and nobody cares because you’re paying to have the insurance benefit whether you use it or not and when you don’t use it, that is money the insurance company does not have to reimburse. It is Medicaid recipients who have to demonstrate financial need. Obviously, it is a terrible shame that anyone would deny Deanne the particular medication her physician thought she needed. It may help some people deflect their own guilt and responsibility to spread blame around or feel validated in making political hay of this case, but what is important is finding Deanne.
The Disappearance
Tuesday, November 3, 2015
Deanne attends her first day of cosmetology school at Glen Dow Academy just six blocks from where her vehicle will later be found. Deanne spent the latter part of her evening with her now daughter-in-law (DIL) Melanie Green doing her nails and discussing their relationships with the men in their lives, as they frequently did.
9:30 pm
Melanie Green (DIL) goes home after spending the evening with Deanne doing nails and talking about their relationships. Deanne responds to Melanie’s text sometime between 9:30-10:00 pm when Melanie arrived home. Deanne’s last message to DIL says “Love you see you soon”.
10:00 pm
Deanne’s last reported use of her cell phone is a text to her son Hayden telling him that she went to school that day and that she hopes he is proud of her.
10:00-10:15 pm?
Deanne possibly executes a plan to leave the home she shares with her fiancé Mike Tibbetts by distracting him with a handwritten note about going to the store while she made her way to a downtown nightclub. If true, then for reasons known only to her Deanne chose to execute this plan instead of waiting for Mike to return home just a few minutes later and invite him to go with her to the club, or to tell Mike the truth about where she was going.
10:15 -10:30 pm
Mike arrives home from work (he worked 12:00 pm -10:00 pm shifts) and claims he found a note from Deanne inside the home that according to Tibbetts’ words on the ID Disappeared episode said:
“…that she had a good day, and she was just, got done doing nails and she was going to run to the store.”
That is a lot of information in a handwritten note that really only needed to say "Ran to the store BRB”. If Deanne were actually running to the store and coming home, she could have told Mike about her day when she returned. If Deanne actually meant to let Mike know that she was at the store in case he found the house empty when he came home or he wanted anything from the store, she would have text him. Deanne had just been texting her DIL and son minutes before she allegedly picked up a pen and wrote a note for Mike Tibbetts that he has never allowed police to see. Mike maintains that the handwritten note is the last thing Deanne ever wrote to him and that is why he cannot part with it, even though he has known that the note was a complete lie by the 4th day that Deanne was missing at the latest. Mike’s refusal to ever turn over either the alleged note or Deanne’s cell phone in the early days and weeks of the investigation into her disappearance, Mike’s actions are not those of a man who really wants to find out what happened to Deanne. Mike’s memories of the note seem to vary slightly. In this interview published 9 days after Deanne went missing Mike says:
“There was a note that said ‘Ran to store, just got done doing girls nails, had a great day,’"
The article further states: “It’s easy to memorize a simple note, especially when it’s the last time you’ve heard from the one you love.” Except Mike doesn’t “memorize” Deanne’s note. He paraphrases it each time and by February 2016 Mike seems to be remembering the night Deanne left home differently than he reported to police:
“The last thing I heard come out of her mouth was I love you," he said. "She went to the store that night, and I haven't seen her since.”
No mention of any note. The note matters because if it ever existed, it would support Mike’s version of the evening: that nothing at all was amiss between himself and Deanne and that whatever happened to cause Deanne to leave the house that night had nothing to do with Mike because it happened before he got home.
11:30 pm Mike gets concerned that Deanne is not home from the store because it is five minutes away. This would be a market now called Rosauer's Market. Out of concern, Mike says he drove to that store. Mike reports that the store was closed, so he returns home. Why does he drive to the store instead of texting, then calling Deanne’s phone? Did Mike do those things first and then drive to the store? He does not report doing so. This is the nearest market to their house. Most people know what time the nearest market to their house closes. Did Mike really think he would find Deanne at the closed market, rather than assume she must be making a stop some place else by then that was open later? Deanne could have gone to a Walgreens that was open late, or been picking up fast food or a pizza. It is interesting that within an hour Mike is already out on the street looking for Deanne on this night.
Wednesday, November 4, 2015
2:30-3:00 am
Mike tracks Deanne’s phone to a parking lot at 919 Sprague in downtown Spokane which is next to The Knitting Factory, a music venue just six blocks from the cosmetology school Deanne attended the morning before. If Mike was able to trace Deanne’s phone using location services, then he also had access to and surely would have looked at her phone usage online to see who she was communicating with besides him before she left their house. Mike should have easily been able to see that there were texts to her son’s and his girlfriend’s numbers in the minutes before he came home. Nonetheless, Mike never actually contacts either one of them himself to ask what Deanne might have said about what she was planning to do that night.
Mike decides to wait by Deanne’s car for the rest of the night. This is an interesting choice considering that the temperature was below freezing that night. Deanne had not been robbed, because Mike found her purse and cell phone secured inside the car. It seems reasonable to assume that Deanne had gone to the club next door and left her purse in the car so she could dance. If Deanne had consumed alcohol, it would be reasonable for her to have gotten a ride home or taken a cab. Mike’s choices seem to prioritize seeing who Deanne might be with when she returned to her car. Mike has claimed that he stayed with Deanne’s car all night in the freezing cold because he wanted to make sure her car did not get broken into with her purse and phone inside. That sounds like a reasonable, too except that after this first night Mike does not call AAA for locksmith service and a tow home. Instead Mike leaves Deanne’s car parked in that same spot in downtown Spokane with her purse and phone inside for *four more nights* beginning on Wednesday.
Overnight
We now know that Deanne Hastings met a grocery store employee of what is now called Yoke's Fresh Market on Spokane-Cheney Road, (known as Latham Trading Company at the time) and that Deanne spent the night with that grocery store employee (GSE). According to the GSE’s information, he met Deanne in front of The Knitting Factory and they went off to party together for the night. In the morning the GSE took Deanne in his car to the grocery store where he worked to purchase cigarettes. The GSE says when he got back to his car, Deanne was gone but she had left her keys behind. He drove around the shopping center, did not see Deanne and left. Deanne was just two miles from home then and she would end up walking most of those two miles in the direction of her home later that afternoon.
7:30-8:00 am
Mike calls Glen Dow Academy to see whether Deanne has shown up for her second day of classes. Glen Dow Academy is located six blocks from where Deanne left her vehicle. Mike must have made quite an impression on whoever he spoke to on the phone about Deanne, because the school owner offered to start making missing person flyers right away instead of minding their own business over an adult staying out all night. Mike says he then began to distribute the missing person flyers all over downtown Spokane. Deanne had been missing less than twelve hours at that point.
Maybe it was reasonable for Mike to call Deanne’s new school and let the administrators know that she had been out all night because Mike was genuinely worried about Deanne’s well being. On the other hand, Mike does not say that he tried calling any hospitals or jails, he does not try going home to see whether or not Deanne has returned there and most importantly, Mike also *does not call* the last two people Deanne Hastings’ phone records would indicate she texted in the minutes before Mike arrived home to (allegedly) find a handwritten note from Deanne about going to the store.
Mike does not go to work during the first twenty-four hours of Deanne’s disappearance. That is how alarmed he is by her being gone overnight this time. It is not clear how Mike accounts for his time and whereabouts during those first twenty-four hours of Deanne’s disappearance other than that he alternately went around the city with missing person flyers, waited at her car and drove the streets looking for Deanne. Every day after Wednesday Mike does go to work.
12:23 pm
Officer Davida Zinkgraf responds to numerous calls for a welfare check requested by strangers in the shopping center parking lot of what is now Yoke’s Fresh Market. These witnesses reported a disoriented and possibly intoxicated/addled woman who had entered a salon and called a woman working there “Mommy", who was now laying on the ground and claiming to witnesses that she may have been drugged, kidnapped and beaten. Deanne would not speak to EMTs or police when they arrived, nor would she give anyone her name or say where she lived although she did tell the ladies attempting to intervene on her behalf that she did not want to go home. When Deanne will not repeat any of the claims about being drugged or beaten to police, does not appear beaten, *refuses to give her name* and then walks away from Officer Zinkgraf, Officer Zinkgraf continues to observe Deanne for another 20 minutes and then reluctantly leaves. Deanne has civil rights and Officer Zinkgraf has an entire city to look after. Deanne is not required to identify herself to police when she is not suspected of any crime. Police cannot detain Deanne for telling wild stories to strangers, nor apparently even for public intoxication because as Officer Zinkgraf explains in the ID Disappeared episode, Spokane does not have a law prohibiting public intoxication. There is also no law in Washington that allows authorities to remand citizens for psychiatric evaluation because of statements by strangers. Civil commitment requires family members to swear out an affidavit that they have observed their family member being a threat to themselves or others. Yes, it is tragically unfortunate that Deanne could not be intervened upon by police and EMT services on the day she disappeared, but hopefully everyone can stop asking how they could have just let Deanne be on her way, because that question has been asked and answered.
12:30 pm
In Officer Zingkraf’s continued observation of Deanne after their initial contact, Deanne enters the grocery store where she uses her debit card to purchase: energy drinks, string cheese, birthday candles, cigarettes and vodka. Mike, who has been out distributing missing person flyers and/or waiting by Deanne’s car, says that he received an alert on his phone that Deanne’s card was used at the grocery store where the GSE works. Did Mike have alerts set on the card for every transaction Deanne made like parents do when they give their teenager a credit card? Mike takes the alert not as notice of potential theft following a crime against Deanne, but as confirmation that Deanne is well and making a purchase. This is why Mike does not rush to the store, he isn’t actually concerned about Deanne’s safety or what has happened to her. He means to see who she is with and confront her. That is why even though Mike apparently believes that Deanne is well and making a purchase, instead of going home he decides to return to/continue to stay with with Deanne’s car. Mike says he believed Deanne would come back to her vehicle and his priority isn’t to get warm or get some sleep, it’s still to see who Deanne is with and confront her. Mike was not going to wait for Deanne to get home.
Sometime after 12:30 pm
Deanne encounters Randy Riley (RR) and his friend “James” on their way to a storage unit RR has rented that is within two blocks of the grocery store where Deanne has just made her purchases. According to both RR and James they hung out with Deanne for a few hours. Storage facility surveillance shows the three of them smiling and interacting in a very friendly manner. The two men are on bicycles. Neither of the men appears to have access to any vehicles of their own with which to move personal belongings, let alone a body (Deanne’s brother Carson confirms this in the Vanished podcast) and none of the trio seem to make any effort to make use of Deanne’s vehicle.
1:30 pm
Storage surveillance shows Randy Riley and Deanne and James leaving the storage facility.
2:30 pm
(information received by police November 25, 2015 three weeks after Deanne disappears and after Randy Riley’s name was released to the media) RR’s landlord who was in the process of evicting him now claims that she remembers seeing Deanne with RR and another man on Wednesday, November 4th near where he claims that he left her and that Deanne was sitting or lying on the ground again.
Another woman who lived near Inland Empire Way believes that she saw Deanne walking with RR and James on I.E. Way and lying on the ground on that day, as well. That witness claims that she was concerned enough to stop and ask Deanne if she was ok, since she was lying on the ground. Deanne told this witness that she was just upset because she was “going through a divorce” and she seemed in control enough of herself that this neighbor moved on. RR does not deny that he was with Deanne on the last day she was seen nor does he deny that he is the last person willing to admit to having seen her.
2:30-4:00 pm
A few hours after Mike learns Deanne used her card at the grocery store, he finally decides to leave Deanne's car downtown and go to that store with Deanne's missing person flyers in hand. There Mike has his first encounter with the GSE in the parking lot outside of the store. The GSE says Deanne looks familiar, but that it's probably not the same girl. It is possible Deanne did not look exactly like her photos on the night she left home because she was disheveled, but it is also possible that the GSE did not want to immediately admit to a frantic man with a missing person flyer of his fiancée who did not appear missing when he spent the night with her. The GSE may have been wary - for good reason - of becoming involved in what appeared to be a domestic situation.
Mike enters the grocery store and asks another store employee if he would be able to look at store surveillance and according to Mike in his Disappeared interview:
“...she said I had to wait and speak with the manager there, so I called the next day (Thursday) and he said I could come in that Saturday and look through it.”
Mike does not report taking the missing person flyers to the surrounding businesses in the shopping center where the grocery store was located, but maybe he did. It would have made sense for him to do so, since he claims he was papering downtown Spokane with the flyers and the shopping center was now Deanne’s most likely last known location. If Mike had contacted the surrounding businesses to leave flyers, he would have been told about Deanne being at the salon calling people “Mommy” and that police and EMTs had been dispatched for the woman on his flyer. Mike would have been told that Deanne was alone and on foot. He would have immediately searched the surrounding neighborhood for Deanne.
At this point on Wednesday afternoon after 2:30 pm Mike puts himself at the grocery store where Deanne made her last purchases. He is less than two miles from where Randy Riley and James claim to have parted ways with Deanne and approximately 1000ft from his home with Deanne. A Google maps search shows that there are very few streets in that area.
The time period from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday deserves a microscope on it, because this is when Deanne actually goes missing. There is one person who according to his own information was devoting himself to nothing else except tracking down Deanne Hastings during that time period and that person is Mike Tibbetts.
Thursday, November 5, 2015
Mike finally reports Deanne missing to police on Thursday morning. He then calls the manager of the grocery store where Deanne’s debit card was last used. In the ID Disappeared episode Mike calmly tells us that the grocery store manager told him over the phone on Thursday that he could come in two days later to look through the video. Mike presses neither the manager of the store nor police to review the video surveillance immediately that would either confirm Deanne was using her own debit card, or point to a suspect in her disappearance. There is apparently none of the urgency that Mike felt when contacting Deanne’s school the morning before. Although he has allegedly been putting up missing person flyers all over town since the day before, Mike now seems to easily accept that no one will review the surveillance video until Saturday and he returns to work. Mike has still not called the last two people Deanne’s phone sent and received texts from: Deanne’s son and her DIL, nor does he call Deanne’s mother who lives only an hour away with Deanne’s two younger children to ask whether she has heard from Deanne. Instead, Mike goes to the media for help in *promoting* Deanne's disappearance. Deanne’s mother had to learn that her daughter was missing from Deanne’s brother who lived in Texas, who had to learn that his sister was missing when he was called by a friend in Spokane who saw the news report on tv. That makes no sense if Mike was genuinely concerned with locating Deanne on Wednesday and Thursday. Mike tells interviewers that he didn’t wish to alarm Deanne’s family. That makes no sense when he is attempting to locate Deanne by all of these other alarming means. When Deanne was out of touch with all her friends and family including Mike Tibbetts for what turned out to be 6 days in June according to the above-referenced police incident report, Mike Tibbetts never did report Deanne missing (nor did he launch a frantic search and contact the media), her son did and Deanne's teenaged son Hayden had the sense to contact friends and family before he made such a report to police.
Saturday, November 7, 2015
Mike is able to view the surveillance video at the grocery store where Deanne made her purchases. She is alone on video, but clearly disoriented as other witnesses described. Mike does not request police to accompany him to view or take control of a copy of the video.

6:00 am
Mike gets a call from the GSE who has been following media coverage of Deanne’s disappearance. The GSE now says he thinks Deanne is a girl he spent the night with on Tuesday/Wednesday and he agrees to meet with Mike to answer more questions.
10:30-11:00 am
The GSE meets with Mike and gives him Deanne's keys. Now Mike says he is finally able to retrieve Deanne’s phone and move her vehicle from the parking lot in downtown Spokane. Mike has made no effort in four days’ time to contact AAA or any other method of locksmith/tow service to secure and remove Deanne’s belongings or vehicle from the parking lot where she left it the night she left home. Again, this is telling since Mike originally felt that securing Deanne’s vehicle required him to stay with the vehicle all night in freezing temperatures.
In his ID Disappeared appearance Mike says of his meeting with the Grocery Store Employee:
“He was very not impressive at all.”
It’s hard to imagine in what way the Grocery Store Employee could have been impressive in this case. What sort of a presentation was Mike expecting the GSE to wow him with? Two years after the fact, Mike still shows seething jealousy/disgust on camera that Deanne went home with this... grocery store employee she met on the street outside of a nightclub, when he was prepared to make her his wife. In his ID Disappeared interview Mike says:
“Obviously I asked him if he had gotten together with her or anything like that. He said that he didn’t, that he had a girlfriend and all those things. I just didn’t believe him. He just didn’t, I don’t know. Just something about him.”
Mike seems like his skin is crawling thinking about his fiancée with this man. Who could blame him?
Sometime after 5:00 pm
Mike raises some sort of mini-posse consisting of a couple of friends and they go to the GSE’s house pretending in super-dramatic fashion like he was going to force his way in if he had to, without the police. The GSE cooperates with Mike and no sign of Deanne is found.
December 10, 2015
Randy Riley (RR) is arrested for identity theft. RR admits to using Deanne’s credit/debit cards. RR first states that Deanne gave him the cards to get something to eat. According to RR’s second version of how he obtained Deanne’s credit cards, on November 5, 2015, he was in a truck belonging to a friend who was helping him move belongings from a nearby the apartment from whence RR was being evicted, to his nearby storage unit where he and “James” had hung out with Deanne the day before. RR claims that he came across Deanne’s coat containing her wallet (or at least whatever credit cards and ID she had taken with her when she left her purse and phone in her vehicle) and according to her brother Carson in the Vanished podcast, RR finds Deanne’s coat and shoes and he takes those, as well. RR claims that these items were in the approximate area where he and “James” had last seen Deanne. In an interview with RR in jail with local affiliate KHQ, RR allegedly claims that he disposed of Deanne’s coat and shoes and threw her ID out in downtown Spokane to make it appear that she had been somewhere other than the last place he and his associate James claim they saw Deanne near “the hill”. It should have been easy enough for police to locate the friend with the truck to corroborate the second version of RR coming to have the cards and also whether or not a PIN number was required in order to use the cards.
There is much speculation that because RR is the last reported person to have seen Deanne alive and because he lied at least once about how he obtained her credit cards, that he must be involved in Deanne’s disappearance. A criminal background check shows RR has a history of drug use and theft (but not robbery) in support his drug habit. RR’s only violent offenses are two domestic violence charges which sounds serious, except those appear to be tied to his loved ones’ intervening in his drug use. One of the charges involved a girlfriend and one from 2005 involved Randy’s own Mother, but this coincides with his use of drugs and drug convictions. As of the time Deanne went missing in 2015 when RR was being evicted from his apartment, apparently all was forgiven by Riley’s Mother because she was allowing him to move in with her while he got his feet back under him. That is where police located him living with a girlfriend when they sought him out for an interview regarding the use of Deanne’s credit cards. RR has never been charged with a forcible felony, nor any sex crime. Randy Riley seems to be just your average petty criminal. In his interview with Spokane detectives, RR comes off as not being kind of a dipshit and a weakling who probably sniffs paint, not a sophisticated criminal who anyone else would be willing to assist by loaning him their vehicle, let alone assisting him in disposing of a body. RR got around on a bicycle. If RR lied about how he obtained Deanne’s credit cards, maybe it was just to avoid a robbery charge, which is a forcible felony and a very serious offense compared with anything on his previous record.
Maybe when RR went to go see whether Deanne was planning to come back out of the bushes and continue walking with him and James, he did tussle with her or otherwise removed the cards from Deanne's coat pocket. James maintains that he has no idea how RR came to have Deanne’s credit cards and he was never on video with RR using the cards, so however the theft and use of the cards came to have happened, it does not appear to be any conspiracy between RR and James.
What if Deanne did lose her coat in a struggle with someone else? Maybe someone who was known to be desperately looking for her all over town, who may have felt betrayed by Deanne falling off the wagon and staying out all night?
The Relationship Between Deanne Hastings and Mike Tibbetts
“Within a couple days of meeting her, I knew she was the one.” - Mike Tibbetts, ID Disappeared interview
Within a couple of days of meeting Deanne Hastings, Mike Tibbetts could not possibly have known what being in a committed, longterm relationship with her might entail. Mike Tibbetts was overwhelmed by Deanne’s beauty upon meeting her and he intended to possess her and be her answer to everything.
Mike continues:
“We got along great. I think we had one argument about wheat bread and white bread... which one to buy. I mean other than that we rarely ever fought.”
Mike is being disingenuous and attempting to seriously mislead us for his own purposes. Mike says he thinks (maybe) he and Deanne had “one” argument. So according to Mike’s information, he and Deanne had anywhere from zero to one argument, but if they did have one argument instead of zero, then Mike recalls that the subject matter of that argument was “about wheat bread and white bread… which one to buy.” To be clear, “rarely ever” fighting is not the same thing as maybe zero to one time arguing about purchasing bread. Mike is trying to convince us of a lie that he only needs to convince us of if he has other lies he needs to convince us of.
Amanda Ladd (Deanne’s longtime best friend) shared text messages with police that show Deanne had been telling her best friend for weeks that she wanted to leave Mike. In texts shown on the episode of the ID Disappeared episode, Deanne says she is “done” and that she believed Mike was drugging her. When confronted with this information, Mike then admits that in the weeks before her disappearance, Deanne was hearing voices and thought neighbors and an ex-boyfriend were breaking into their house, drugging the water supply and/or trying to kill her and she even accused Mike of being in on the conspiracy. Deanne does not mention the neighbors or an ex-boyfriend to Amanda Ladd, only Mike. None of what Mike ends up describing is within the realm of everything being “fine” prior to Deanne’s disappearance, anyway. Why didn’t Mike take Deanne to a hospital or at least make an appointment with her doctor if he believed she was hearing voices and accusing half the people in her life of conspiring against her instead of just him?
Deanne’s now daughter-in-law Melanie Green (DIL) states in her ID Disappeared interview that although she never witnessed any fights between Deanne and Mike, Deanne would regularly text message her DIL using a “girl code” they had about doing nails, for when she needed to talk about the relationship troubles with Mike that she was having. What were the nature of Deanne’s issues with Mike that she confided in her DIL about? Melanie Green never mentions wheat bread OR white bread.
Mike wants us to believe that even when Deanne went missing for 6 days in June and had to be reported missing to police by her son because no one including Mike had heard from her for days, that he and Deanne did not exchange any words of argument. Mike wants us to believe that when Deanne accused him of drugging her and even trying to kill her, that his and Deanne's conversation(s) about those issues were less dramatic than a conversation over whether to purchase wheat or white bread. Mike wants us to believe that even when he was able to confirm that Deanne had just spent the night with another man - who Mike says he does not believe was honest when he told Mike that he and Deanne had not "gotten together” - that Mike was going to be ok with that. An honest answer from Mike Tibbetts would have been that he and Deanne had many ups and downs in their short, whirlwind relationship due to Deanne’s ongoing issues with bipolar disorder, that they had been at odds many times before and that this “episode” could have very well ended their relationship had Deanne not gone permanently missing. Instead, Mike chooses to be completely dishonest and that is a huge red flag in a case like this.
Artist Michael Carini of San Diego, CA was a longtime friend of Deanne’s. On the previously linked webpage where he pays tribute to Deanne, he says she had recently contacted him and said that the relationship she was in with Mike was “unhealthy”:
“Shortly before her final disappearance in 2015, she contacted me and told me she had to get out of her current relationship because it was unhealthy. Deanne was known to tell stories and bend the truth, but I felt the sincerity in her voice. She had been clean and sober for a long time and really seemed to be turning her life around.”
January 2016
Randy Riley’s friend James who had walked with RR and Deanne on the day she disappeared and who was not charged with any crime related to her disappearance or the use of her cards, contacted Amanda Ladd via the Missing Deanne Facebook page to say that he wanted to speak with anyone who wanted to speak with him about Deanne and that he would tell them anything they wanted to know. He claims he does not know Randy very well and James stuck to his same story: Deanne went up the hill to relieve herself, Randy went to check on her for several minutes and then returned ALONE and the two men proceeded on their way. According to Deanne’s brother Carson’s account of the phone call, James tells Deanne’s brother words to the effect of “I can’t believe she didn’t make it home, she was so close to home, she was going to walk up the hill. I can’t believe she didn’t make it home.” James seemed genuinely desperate to reassure Deanne’s family that whatever happened to Deanne did in fact happen after he and Randy Riley left her on the hill near the home she shared with Mike Tibbetts.

2020.09.14 18:08 SherlockBeaver Disappeared: Deanne Hastings My Leading Theory

Sunday, November 8, 2015

2020.09.13 01:06 BlackPhillip4Eva Client DOs and DONTs - The Complete Guide

Hello redditors! I come to you as a professional groomer of 10 years. I know that's not much experience on the table compared to some, but it's still enough time to have seen some sh!t. Over the years, I've learned so much about what makes a good groomer, and even more about what makes a good client. I, like many of you, have spent plenty days rolling my eyes, mumbling under my breath, internally screaming, and just overall appalled by the audacity of some people.
I know that pet owners/grooming clients frequent this sub as much as we (the groomers!) do, so I figured I'd post some helpful, insightful information. This information, as funny as it may seem, is pretty important. Please read along and follow these step by step instructions laid out before you. I guarantee that in doing so, you'll be a GREAT grooming client in no time. The following information will keep you from being fired by various groomers, banned from multiple salons, and also keep your pet happy/healthy. Enjoy!
Chapter One: DO show up! Please, please, please show up to the appointment that you have scheduled. Preferably a few minutes early, or on time. Nothing says inconsiderate like being 20 minutes late. Nothing says total a$$hole like someone who can no call, no show. If you do not value our time, we will not value your business. We understand accidents (literally) happen, and you could be running a few minutes behind. We understand life gets in the way sometimes and a last minute cancelation has to occur. But for the love of doG, give us a courtesy call.
Chapter Two: DO brush your dog! It's quite a simple concept. Long haired dogs require routine brushing.. But, in the event that you can't do it yourself, that is literally our job. Schedule a 10 or 15 minute brushing session with us. We don't like shaving dogs on #10 blades because they're so matted. We don't like risking clipper burning skin or causing irritation to sensitive skinned pups. We actually aren't being lazy, or careless. Hint, that's actually you. The one...not brushing your dog. So, just do it. Or let us. Its that simple. Your dog will thank you, too. DONT lie to us and say you did brush your dog, when clearly, you didn't. You can lie to your momma, but don't lie to your groomer. We know. There are telltale signs that indicate...you've been slacking in the brushing department.
Chapter Three: DONT fight the price. This isn't a pawn shop, so don't haggle with us. We don't negotiate price. The price is the price. Period. A lot of factors go into what we charge. Ex. - The dogs breed, size, coat condition, etc. Specific breed clips may be pricier. We also factor in cost of labor and equipment maintenance. Blades, shears, clippers, shampoos, and everything else we use aren't cheap. A certified master groomer may charge more than the apprentice. But they know their worth. The phrase "Good ain't cheap, and cheap ain't good" comes to mind here. You really do get what you pay for when it comes to services. A groomer is no different. Editors note - the demat fee you see on your ticket is because you failed to read and follow the aforementioned chapter two. Please revisit that if you have any questions about the importance of routine brushing.
Chapter Four: DO bring in your vaccination paperwork. It is not our responsibility to track that down. I can't spend 15 minutes on hold with your vet clinic to verify your pet is up-to-date because you failed to remember to bring it in. Sometimes, the vets won't even give us that information because we are not you. Patient privacy restrictions exist.
Chapter Five: DO be specific, DONT be vague. Saying you want a "puppy cut" on your Maltese tells me absolitely nothing. That is a specific trim to the Poodle breed. Saying to cut the hair "short, but not too short" is infuriating for us. Short is subjective. What you find too short, I may find to be the perfect length. And then you're going to chew my head off when it's wrong, and I couldn't read your mind with my crystal ball. Tell me what you want. Lay it out. Provide pictures from Google of haircuts you like, and we can determine if that will work for your dog.
Chapter Six: DONT call us to check in and see if your dog is ready 2 hours prior to the time frame you were quoted. "I will call you when he's ready!" means you will receive a phone call when your dog is done. There's no gray area here. Either your dog is done, or he isn't. We don't need you to call and check on Teddy. Editors note - DO come and pick your dog up shortly after we call you. We aren't a daycare or a boarding service. Chances are if your groomer works at a busy shop, they need all the kennel space they can get, as it's probably often limited. Leaving your dog there for HOURS can cause quite a few issues. Most shops don't take these dogs out to potty. Again, not a daycare.
Chapter Seven: DONT argue about policy. The rules are the rules. In many cases, the person you're speaking with didn't make those particular rules. Sometimes we just have to follow them. No, we cannot groom your unvaccinated dog. No, we can't muzzle your extremely stressed/aggressive dog. No, you can't come back into the shop and holding your dog for us. No, you can't pay us 3 days later. No, no, no. There are certain things that sometimes put our jobs at risk, and we aren't making any exceptions for you. Stop asking.
Chapter Eight: DO tip your stylist! It's seriously appreciated. We work very hard. Holidays, weekends, you name it. This is a back breaking industry. We risk bites, and physical injury. Our backs and knees wear down.. We work long, grueling hours, sometimes without remembering to even eat lunch. We deal with angry clients. We deal with phones ringing off the hook, dogs barking all day, dryers humming in the background. Our job isn't for the faint of heart. But we do it because we genuinely enjoy it. We love our craft. We love the art. We love your dogs. Show us some appreciation. You're being provided a service. Just as you would tip your tattoo artist, your waitress, your bartender, tip your groomer.
I hope you've found this information somewhat informative. Maybe a little funny, too. Other groomers, please feel free to chime in with any additional chapters you may think could be potentially helpful to others. Thank you for reading!

    • LDH in consolation with CMS is working to finalize plans for a pilot program to see if we can allow for some visitation, specifically outdoor visitation. It would be a 28-day pilot program. Nursing homes will have to be located in parishes with 5% positivity or less and the home has to have 0 cases in the last 14 days to participate. Additional details to be provided.
    • People at the Department of Health are putting forth great effort to make sure we are doing this in a safe and effective way.
Dr. Billioux
I will upload a better version when I can
  • Data we are looking at when we look at the upper left we see COVID-like illness (people presenting to an ER with symptoms of COVID), below is a graph showing the volume of testing and organs bars show the percent positivity gray line is the 10% line, upper right is the epi curve (new cases remove every day by collection date) black line is the average of incidence over time, bottom right blue line is the hospitalizations and the organ line shows the last 14 days.
  • We always look at 14 days because that is the recommendation for the gating criteria from the White House.
  • COVID-like illness has been on a steady decline across every region since we had the mask mandate.
  • The testing graph shows the interruption that happened as a result of Marco and Laura, the state needed to redeploy its resources and its National Guard partners meaning we could not do community testing at the level we wanted. So you can see the decline from the week that represents the storm, and you are beginning to see a rebound from that due to our wonderful National Guardsmen redeploying our testing sites. However, we are not seeing the line come up very high very quickly.
  • The people of Louisiana need to know:
    • Testing is widely available.
    • Get tested if you have symptoms.
    • Get tested if you've been exposed.
    • Get tested if you evacuated due to Hurricane Laura.
  • As you can see the percent positivity has been declining, we are at about 6.79% right now, which is well below the 10% recommendation for the state.
  • The epi curve shows we have been on a steady decline since the mask mandate and bar closures.
    • More recently there has been an uptick in the state. Some of that reflects a decrease in testing with a new increase in testing and some of that reflects quite frankly new cases that we know are evolving in settings like universities and schools, but not over a 14 day period. We have not made that criteria of a 14 day period.
  • Hospitalizations have been on a steady decline since the new restrictions.
  • Strictly speaking, looking at the data we have met the criteria for moving into Phase 3.
  • However, there is data we don't see/know, that is what we need to be watching out for
    • Impact of Hurricane Laura
      • We had a week we didn't have visibility for because of decreased testing.
      • Frankly, there is not as much testing happening as we would like to see from shelterees and evacuees right now. We do not know if transmission of the virus has happened because we are not catching it because we not seeing people taking advantage of the testing.
      • Testing sites in Lake Charles and Sulphur.
      • Testing available at points of distribution.
      • Testing sites in New Orleans and Baton Rouge in hotels.
      • There is a significant amount of asymptomatic spread, please get tested and protect your family.
    • Schools reopening - the impact of K-12 going back to school and universities reopening. Part of that is because we paused testing and because people went back home and now they have returned to school.
      • We know not everyone has gone back to full in person.
      • Most have done hybrid learning.
    • Labor Day Weekend - because there hasn't been enough time.
      • Most people stayed home and celebrated with their household.
      • Some people didn't and we won't know the impacts until 2 weeks from now.
      • Hopefully, we will find people by large did what we asked. That cases and hospitalizations stay down because as you saw we have a very active Atlantic season right now. Not a good time for us to face multiple disasters as we have more COVID increase.
  • Another trend we are focused on is the increase in cases in the 18-29-year-old age group.
    • The sharp uptick in 18-21-year-old age group.
      • The age group that has gone back to school.
      • Still seeing that group come up even with bars closed.
      • Watch this very carefully especially as we talk about gatherings and football.
    • Saw last time that as this age group leads other age groups followed.
  • CDC released a report of childcare settings and infections of those that the child return home to.
  • Under the age of 21 we really do not want you in the bar setting. You should not be there. You are not of drinking age, and it brings you into a setting where you are at high risk for exposure.
  • COVID like illness is decreasing across the state. When we look at cases across the state it is a mixed bag. There are many regions across the state where we are seeing an uptick in cases but they do not meet the 14-day threshold.
  • Note Region 5 is difficult because it is the SW Louisiana and it is difficult because all numbers plummeted because of evacuation and as they return we would expect to see increases.
  • Concerned as we look at hospitalizations. Our biggest concern is being able to have adequate healthcare capacity to meet the needs of Louisiana.
    • Watching these trends closely.
  • As we move into Phase 3 and there are greater capacity in restaurants and some bars and operate in limited services. It is critical to remember that everything that has gotten us to this point still needs to be in place.
    • The physical distancing of 6 ft or more is really important.
      • When we call you and ask if you have been in 6 ft of someone for greater than 15 minutes... you will still be a potential contact and need to quarantine for 14 days if you have been exposed to a known positive COVID case for more Thant 15 minutes.
    • Continue to wear a mask. More and more data shows that people who are shedding the virus mask usage reduces the risk you spread the tother people. You protect other people by wearing a mask and other people protect you by wearing their mask.

Questions

Do you have any idea how many parishes are below 5% or less?
5 out of 64 parishes.
Mechanically does the 2 week period become effective today or does it become effective on the 16th?
As the governor noted we will be updating this, we have been providing these updates and will provide the next one on the 16th. First, the parish has to make 2 (2-week checks at 5% positivity or less so 4 weeks total, and then the parish government has to opt-in.
What does the nursing home pilot program look like?
What you will see us talking about, is decreasing becomes less relevant than what is going on in the community. The percent of positivity is especially important. What is the level of spread in your community? So for the nursing home pilot we are looking at a low community spread so probably 5% or less in the community. We are also working with nursing homes to establish protocols where people are outdoors. People are wearing PPE and it has to be a pretty nicely mandated visitation where you know who and when someone is coming, being symptomatic, isolated, or quarantined for COVID-19 will all be reasons to not see your loved one. Out of the 5,000 Louisianians, we have lost so far 40% have been from nursing homes. As we look to have families reunite we must do this in a way to not put your loved ones at risk. Not only your loved one but those in the rest of the facility as well.
John Bel Edwards
  • A parish has to be eligible so they have to be at the 5% below the threshold for at least 2 weeks.
    • Data is publicly available on the LDH website.
  • Parish has to opt-in.
  • If at some point subsequent to opting in a parish gets to 10% or higher in positivity then those bars will close again. Then it starts over again and they will have to satisfy the gating criteria again.
    • Otherwise, you would reopening and closing bars within a few days or so, so this is a way to do this responsibly and safely under the control of the local government.
  • Today's COVID-data
  • We've had some positive trends that allowed just to make these moves but I have a concern about what isn't reflected in the data which is why this has been the most difficult decision I had to make with respect to applying the gating criteria to the phasing.
  • Encourage people to take mitigation measures seriously.
  • As we reopen more of the economy/our churches, to more occupancy, these things only really work if we continue to wear our masks. Wash your hands frequently. Stay home when sick. Socially distance from that outside for your household
  • Outdoors is safer than indoors.
    • If you want to support restaurant pick up, get delivery, or eat outdoors.
  • People need to understand there isn't a lot of room for movement forward beyond Phase 3 until we get past the pandemic.
    • Until such time social distancing isn't required how do you go to 100% occupancy?
    • We do not go from 75% to 100% until the pandemic is over.
  • Hurricane Laura Info Mod note I am not covering this but if you would like me to please message me.

Questions

Missed question
I am concerned about the impact Labor Day will have. Experienced the beginning of the Summer with Memorial Day. We Know that is when we had a surge in cases driven by the younger population, particularly those in the 18-29-year-old group. I hope behavior would be different for Labor Day because everyone saw the impact that behavior had on our state. Dr. Birx was talking about, the White House was talking about it. I am hopeful that won't happen again. I am relieved we are increasing our testing numbers again and having more testing sites coming up and will be watching the data very closely. I am mindful that we have started school. Colleges' campuses have also opened to students. But am comforted that there is still a lot of virtual and hybrid learning occurring. We do not have a lot of school systems fully open for in-person instruction. I believe Louisiana will do what is needed to protect one another from having a repeat of what happened after Memorial Day.
Is there some scenario where we have those Labor Day numbers come in and they are so bad you change your mind and we go back?
There is always [that possibility], whether because of Labor Day or anything else, you watch the numbers. We will not put ourselves on a course where we lose the ability to deliver life-saving care in our hospitals. It didn't happen in the first or second surge and I will not let it happen going forward. Yeah it certainly remains possible, but I am hopeful we will not get anywhere close to that, but if we have to we will. I have said this all along. That is why we keep making the point -- it is not a theory anymore -- we had that huge surge in March and April and we were able to flatten the curve through a stay at home order but, we have shown reducing our curve is not reliant on having to have a stay at home order if people wear their masks, wash their hands, and social distance. You can have a larger portion of your economy open and have and much normalcy as possible without the cases skyrocketing if you adhere to the mitigation measures. It is up to the people of Louisiana to adhere to them. I have a lot of concerns. Anytime you announce you are going to the next phase people tune out all the info they are given that COVID is still here, that abiding by mitigation measures, protecting the vulnerable, all of that stuff and some people will say well we are going forward and that is all they think about. That mindset is what causes us to have real issues as well. Need people to mindful. I ask local leaders to set good examples so we can stay on top of this virus and keep trends going in the right direction.
Will Phase 3 have any impact on the state workforce in respect to the public sector
In order to make sure all sate employees are working where they can be most efficient and productive in the safest possible way. Where you have offices, for example, cannot be at 100% so some of those people will continue to be home. Some agencies work in office spaces that are less traditional where it is harder to work safer in that environment while people on wildlife and fisheries are on a boat and in a safer environment.

Closing remarks

  • Thank you for continuing to cover this.
  • If you look at the Gulf of Mexico to the West Coast of Africa you will see a number of storm systems most of which do not pose a threat to Louisiana. The one off of the coast of Florida does, and too soon to know about the coast of Africa. It will be very difficult for our state if we have to go through another hurricane in our present posture where we have people already sheltered from the last storm which we are still trying to recover from.
  • Lift each other in prayer.
  • Be good neighbors.
  • Do what is required of us to protect ourselves, family, and one another.
  • Next press conference on Monday afternoon.

2020.09.10 08:41 dmatje Comparing San Francisco and Seattle's COVID-19 Response

Comparing San Francisco and Seattle's COVID-19 Response
After visiting Seattle (King County) from San Francisco (SF), I wondered how the Emerald City has fared with its SARS-CoV-2 infections since it has been open for indoor dining (@ 25% capacity), personal services (salons/barbers, nails, massage, etc) and gym usage since June 19th. San Francisco remains closed to these services as of September 9th. Using the publicly available data from each county through September 6th, I sought to determine if SF’s more stringent business policies significantly improve the COVID positive infections and deaths compared to KC on a total and per-population basis, as KC is nearly 3x larger in population compared to SF.
https://preview.redd.it/u0tqvkutm9m51.jpg?width=646&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=663e426eb9a7bd9331dd54e626a65e6afe8e2df2
The graph of the cases/day (through Aug 30th when I originally started looking at this data) clearly show that SF’s (Blue) early “Shelter in Place” order was prescient and highly effective in limiting the number of positive cases in the early stages of the pandemic. KC (Orange) experienced significantly more cases and deaths (not shown) between March 1 and June 19th. The leadership and business community, particularly the technology companies that instituted early work from home orders should be lauded for their foresight.
However, since KC’s transition to their “Stage 2” reopening, which allows the services and functions listed above, the patterns for both cities look nearly identical, with peaks in early August and a slow decline in cases through the end of August, despite the significant differences in business policies.

Comparison of San Francisco and King County COVID-19 Cases and Deaths
The numerical breakdown shows this more clearly. On a per-population basis, San Francisco has a nearly 60% higher rate of positive infections compared to KC. The 7-day moving average, a metric claimed as critical to the re-opening decisions of the SF mayor’s office, shows nearly a 70% higher rate for SF than KC for my first analysis dates and 100% greater for the most recent reliable data, which is rather large! Conversely, the death rate from COVID-19 is nearly 30% lower for SF, the basis of which I am not prepared to explain.
This analysis brings into question the rationale behind San Francisco having more stringent restrictions nearly 3 months longer than a comparable city given the economic costs to small businesses and their employees. Thoughts are welcome.

2020.09.05 03:00 explots Update: No-Buy August

Hi! I shared that was going on a No-Buy in August. This sub is full of commitments to do better but I don’t know if people do enough follow-up posts. Here’s mine for my first attempt: somewhat mixed, but overall very happy.
How it went, by category
I basically succeeded in these categories, though it was a struggle - I deleted apps and put them back; I bargained with myself about “just one palette”; I ultimately wasn’t able to stay away from making lists. Having a date when I was allowed to shop again helped me assemble lists and wait for the right moment.
I canceled three boxes - Allure, New Beauty, and Ipsy - for this no-buy, but already had a recurring prepaid Boxycharm sub ($23 for this month) and beauty pie membership ($20). I did not spend at Boxy Pop-up, though, despite being really attracted to it, nor did my BeautyPie sub actually lead to purchases.
In September, both my BeautyPie and BoxyCharm memberships expire and I'm not planning to replace either.
$0 spent here. Great success! Instead I led a couple of art activities and actually used up all the ink in one of my Copic markers - a sign of progress if there ever were one.

This was my first failure - I could not resist a reference atlas on ~day 5. $30 spent. I have read it, though - so that’s something - and I’ve done a fair amount more reading while avoiding beauty websites. I bought no other books, and have done a decent amount of reading.

I spent about $50 around the end of the month on masks, a handful of scrunchies, and a pile of hats for sun protection (after watching a bit of beauty YouTube).

FINAL TALLY: $159 [$9 on makeup, $70 on skincare (rx tret, sunscreen), $30 on a book, $50 on clothes/accessories]
--

What did I do instead?
A beauty goal I had for this month was to pan some old skincare, explore techniques, and get use out of all my ‘nice’ palettes. I’ve actually been doing well here:

My September plan:
As my no-buy has expired, I'm thinking through what principles feel good for the rest of the year. For September, I want to loosen a bit and replace my decluttered off/spoiled items, but not go overboard - so I'm setting a clear intention:
I don't want to spend $200 every month, so this is a humbling reminder of how expensive a complete high-end makeup kit really is. Good luck out there, guys!

Los Angeles County Announces Planned Reopenings with Safeguards in Place

Reopenings Allow for School Services for Students Most in Need and Increase Access to Hair Salons and Barbershops

Post Date: 09/02/2020 4:01 PM
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 2, 2020 Contact: LA County Emergency Operations Joint Information Center [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])
Los Angeles County is moving forward with new plans for reopening a couple of sectors, given its steady progress in slowing the spread of COVID-19.
Providing educational services to students most in need is a priority, as they most benefit from on campus support. On September 14th, Los Angeles County will allow schools to offer on campus services for small, stable, cohorts of K-12 students who need learning support, including children with special needs that have an Individualized Education Plan and are English Learners. Waivers for this are not required, but schools must submit to the Department of Public Health an operational plan and they must comply with Health Officer Order guidance and protocols in order to serve students. Those receiving services are required to maintain small group cohorts of no more than 12 students and two supervisors and it will be a stable group of people to maintain safety for both students and teachers.
Effective today, hair salons and barbershops can reopen immediately at 25% occupancy for indoor services as long as they have infection control safeguards in place and comply with the County’s Health Officer Order (HOO) Reopening Protocols for Hair Salons and Barbershops, which require physical distancing and face coverings for both employees and customers. As permitted by the state, hair salons and barbershops are encouraged to maintain as many operations outdoors as possible.
The updated Health Officer Order and protocols will be on Public Health’s website later today.
All other prior restrictions will remain at this time.
Protecting Los Angeles County residents and workers while reopening remains our number one priority. If at any time the County’s rate of infection and other key metrics return to unsafe levels, the County will reassess and take appropriate action.
Los Angeles County’s Reopening Protocols, COVID-19 Surveillance Interactive Dashboard, Roadmap to Recovery, Recovery Dashboard, and additional things you can do to protect yourself, your family and your community can be found here.
In the coming weeks, we will continue to diligently monitor critical COVID-19 public health indicators while simultaneously evaluating our County’s ability to responsibly and safely expand our efforts to reopen schools and the economy. It is critical that all Los Angeles County residents stay the course — continue wearing face coverings, hand-wash, observe physical distancing and avoid gatherings with individuals outside of your household, especially as we head into the Labor Day holiday weekend.

2020.08.31 08:46 ChrisKoleszar The Duxbury Chronicles "The Dumpster"

The Duxbury Chronicles
https://i.redd.it/itwruj5d8ak51.gif
“Rain fell on the roofs of the just and the unjust, the saints and the sinners, those who knew peace and those in torment, and tomorrow began at a dark hour.”
- Robert R McCammon, "Mine"
August 6th, 1982 was a day in Duxbury that no one liked to talk about. No one who is still around who remembers it anyway. It had been a hot one. Hot, humid, and most of all, wet. It had been that way all summer.
“Unnatural.” The old timers were wont to say.
By mid-summer rainfall all along the East coast had hit records not seen since the 20's. The nearby swamps and rivers had deepened. Dark, murky water encroaching onto lands normally dry. The Duxbury Bogs, and the North Hill Marsh Sanctuary in particular had been cause for concern.
By mid-July (Courtesy of the Bogs) Pilgrim's Highway had been flooded over. Blocking Mayflower Street all the way down passed East Street. Island Creek Pond, and the North Hill Sanctuary had joined forces. Turning the lands that divided them into one giant wilderness of muck, and water.
And by the end of July it looked like Cranberry Bog, and Pine Lake were on the verge of rising up high enough to join the other two. And submerge the whole damn area. It had been an ugly business already.
Homes in and around Pettibush Lane, Maple Pond Lane, and Evergreen Street had already been lost to flooding. And there had even been talk last weekend during the Duxbury Town Hall Council Meeting of the possible necessary evacuation of Tinker's Ledge Road if the rains kept up.
That had gotten people buggin'. Markus McDuff had leapt up, and shouted with the vigor of a man half his age. Declaring that “They'd have to drag his dead body” off his Apple Farm if they came to evacuate him.
There had been a grasshopper boom as well. Everyone said it was because of all the rain. The population thickened as one got further from the busier streets. Certain sections of the Whiton Woods were so thick with the little green insects that it was hard to describe in words.
One had to “see it, to believe it”. On some of the trails every step one took would literally be accompanied by a multitude of tiny springy sounds. As the brainless bugs leapt away from whatever giant passed them by.
They hadn't been the only insects to flourish in the unusually wet weather. The Cicadas had come out in force for the season as well. And they sang their summer songs with an unprecedented fervor. Every evening around dusk, they'd alight in the branches of the trees and chirp up at the brilliant shifting purple, and orange canvas in the sky.
In the trees all along Island Creek the insects seemed to be especially prevalent. There were certain sections of the creek where one would have to practically shout to be heard over the buzzing cacophony. It was, needless to say, not a good season for insectophobes.
Despite all the climate issues the “tourist” season (small as it was) did not seem to really suffer. Which had been quite a relief to the local business owners. And ever since August started it hadn't rained. As a result the general mood around town was brighter than usual.
But on this early afternoon, one resident's mood was especially chipper. Deputy Robert Maxwell was walking down Harrison street with a particular “pep” in his step. That was because he had just scored a dyno date with the town Betty!
A bodacious babe by the name of Mary Barbadino. She'd been the morning waitress at Alice's Restaurant for going on three years now. Bob had grown up in Duxbury, and had always liked Alice's. But it had become his pre-shift breakfast spot pretty much every day since he'd first laid eyes on Mary in that tight-fitting waitress uniform. Even on his days off.
He still couldn't believe his luck! Bob, at the ripe old age of thirty seven, was not exactly known for being a lady's man. He wasn't some hoser or anything. But he was no primo stud either.
And she'd approached him! He’d known that Mary had broken up with her boyfriend Marcus Greene four months prior. But he had never had the cajones to do anything about it.
The situation between Mary and Marcus was like a badly written movie. Marcus and his posse were the local tough guys. He and his crew always seemed to be getting into trouble. Be it a fight at the local bar, or a “domestic dispute” at one of their biker parties.
If it was true that in life everyone had a role to play. Then it was Marcus's destiny to be an asshole. That's not what had stopped him from making a move on Mary however. Bob was a Roller after all. He'd just been too chicken.
So this morning when Mary had come over with a cup of coffee in hand and slid into the empty seat across the table from him, he'd been struck speechless for a few seconds. The conversation had been quick, and direct. Mary talking, and Bob mostly nodding, and trying to keep his mouth from hanging open.
She'd wanted to know if he was interested in catching a movie after her shift. Bob would have watched the bunkest movie in the world with Mary. He'd quickly agreed, and the two had made plans to meet when she got off at five.
The Deputy made it to the corner, and took a right onto Washington Street. He was headed to Barry's Meats. The local butcher shop. Barry was legendary in the region for his kielbasa. And tonight after whatever movie they ended up seeing, he was going to surprise Mary with a better meal than Alice's had ever put on a plate!
He walked briskly. Passing Beaver Brook Lane, and making a mental note to stop at Snug Harbor Wine on his way back home. It was nearly 12:30, which gave him approximately four and a half hours to get dinner made, get dressed, and be back at Alice's.
He’d originally been scheduled to be on duty until six. And had agreed to meet Mary without giving it a second thought. After realizing his error, he'd been worried that the “boss man” wouldn't be accommodating to his sudden plans. But after he made it back to the Station, Sheriff Copper had been all to happy to give him the night off.
In truth Copper at first been as incredulous as Bob had initially been. But the Sheriff was a good (if not gruff) man. And with a hearty laugh had granted his request. Giving him a hard pat on the back, and leaving him with the wise words – “Happy hunting son!”, as he had walked out through the Station doors.
He swiftly passed by a group of children playing in Washington Park. Off in the distance a baseball game was going on. He vaguely remembered seeing a flyer earlier in the week stating that the Duxbury Dragons would be playing their first game of the season today.
Across the street loomed the Saint John's Evangelist Church. The ancient stone structure cast a long shadow across the street. Bob only gave it a cursory glance as he passed it by.
He was not a religious man. Though his Mother regularly attended. In truth the place had always kind of creeped him out.
He looked around. He didn't see the local Pastor, Father John anywhere. Which he ironically thanked God for. The short fat man was always lurking about somewhere in town. Always looking to “add to the flock” as he put it.
“Lurking.” No. That wasn't the right word for it. For all their brief encounters, and by all accounts Father John was a pleasant man. Known for his charity work, and volunteering at the local soup kitchen in fact. He felt like a dick for having the thought in the first place, and quickly pushed it out of his mind.
By the time he had crossed Freeman Place, and was walking alongside the monolithic structure of the Hudson Bank; His thoughts had once again returned to Mary, and what exactly he'd done to make this morning so different than all the countless others. He glanced to the left. Looking at his wavy reflection as he passed by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the massive building.
Well, he had started working out. In fact in the last two months he'd lost almost twenty pounds! A big part of that was the change up in his diet.
Egg whites and coffee for breakfast, instead of pancakes. Salad for lunch instead of a burger. Come to think of it. Hadn't Mary been the one to first suggest his change up in breakfast?
Or maybe it was his fresh new 'stache. At first he'd been hesitant to try and grow one. Stylized facial hair had never been his thing. But he quickly realized that it was totally choice. His mom said he looked like Tom Selleck...
Bob was enwrapped in these thoughts as he reached the corner. He wasn't looking in any particular direction. And only half heard the quick, panicked steps. Just before someone came sprinting around the other side of the building, and collided straight into him.
The Deputy was knocked off his feet. Landing hard on his back. He managed to keep his head from bouncing off the pavement. But for a few seconds he saw stars anyway.
“Bab!” He recognized Boston George's voice. He sat up, and attempted to bring the man into focus.
“Oh Babby thank Gad it's you!”
Bob began to slowly climb to his feet. But the skinny forty-something man was faster. He practically leapt up, and dashed over to the Deputy. Offering him a hand, and helping him to stand.
“We got a real situation here Babby!” The man was saying. His eyes darting around frantically. In that moment he looked like a rabbit that had just escaped a wolf.
Georgey McCabe, or “Boston George” as he was known by the locals, had gotten his name because of his heavy accent. And because well... He was from Boston. Which could be quite a big deal in some circles within such a small town.
He was a “born, and bread Irishmen of the Big City on a Hill”, as he was wont to say. Bob had never been, but he imagined that Georgey was a pretty accurate representation of the average Bostonian.
Boston George had moved to Duxbury from Beantown three years prior. He always seemed to have a lot of money. Though no one knew exactly what it was that he did.
He drove a candy apple red BMW M1. Almost always with the top down. Even in winter. Anywhere he went with it he drove like a man on his way to save the world.
Georgey had accumulated quite an impressive pile of tickets and citations since coming to Duxbury. But he always had the money to pay off his fines, and so had remained on the road.
“For now.” Sheriff Copper had said to Bob one night at the station.
Copper didn't like Boston George. Though Georgey seemed oblivious to the fact. He kept speeding. And the Duxbury Police Department kept profiting off his “stunt man” antics.
Bob had never ticketed Georgey personally however. He and the Irishmen had become some-time poker buddies shortly after his arrival. The Deputy liked to gamble once in a while. Georgey loved it. And the man had one hell of a poker face.
Over the last two years he'd taken far more of Bob's money than Bob had his. That was for sure. The man also liked to sometimes go out “day drinking” as he put it. And as he took in George's disheveled appearance, he began to suspect that was exactly what the man's afternoon activities had consisted of thus far.
The thinning hair on his head stuck out in tufts pointing in all directions. His Aloha shirt was only half tucked into his shorts. Bob realized that the man was also missing one of his flip-flops.
But there was a distinct panic in Georgey's eyes. A sort of wild terror that gave him pause. The man was talking he realized. Thickly accented words flowing out of his mouth a mile a minute. Though he had no idea what he'd been saying.
“Take a red Georgey!” Bob shouted, raising his hand in a silencing gesture as he did.
George fell quiet. For a few seconds all that could be heard was the chirping birds, and George's ragged breathing.
“What. Is the problem?” He didn't have time for this.
“There's-...” George gulped in a lungful of air. Trying to steady his voice. “There's some kind of manstah in the dampsta behind Bahn’s Maket. And I think it got Old Man Pete!”
“What?” Bob asked. Truly at a loss.
“Oh for Gad's sake Bab! I'm tellin' you that there's something in the damn dampsta behind Bahn's Maket! And I think it got Pete!” The man was quickly becoming hysterical.
“Okay. Okay.” Bob said. Raising his hand once again in a placating gesture. “So tell me what happened.”
“I was sittin' outside Lux Cafe. Out in one of the chairs on the patio. Just having a drink ya'know?”
At this Bob quirked an eyebrow. Georgey didn't seem to notice.
“Anyways, so I'm sittin' there out on the patio when I see Old Man Pete come out of his store, and go around to the back alley with a bag full of trash.”
Peter Barne's was the elderly owner of Barne's Market. The local Grocery Co-op. Pete was in his seventies, but had moved like a man half is age up until his wife Edna had passed last winter.
Since then Pete had developed a noticeable stoop in his stance. Now he walked with slow, pained movements. These days he seemed to look at the ground more than anything else.
In truth it pained the Deputy to see the old man slowly fall apart. Bob had known Pete since he'd been just a boy. He'd been known as “Old Man Pete” even back then. But in those days he’d sported a full head of gray hair.
“-So like after five minutes go by.” Boston George was saying. “I notice that Petey hasn't come back out from the alleyway yet. So I stat worrying that the poor old bugger's hurt himself or something ya'know? So I get up, and I go across the street to go check on him.”
Bob knew the area George was referring to well. It was called East Cove Plaza, and was consequently the only spot on Surplus Road that had any businesses on it. Four to be exact.
All located around one square block. Barnes Market, and the Red Herring Diner on one side of the street. East Bay Salon, and Lux Lounge on the other.
Up until a year, and a half ago there had only been three businesses. But Lux had opened up next to East Bay. It was this “new age” hippie cafe/bar. It was owned by this unbelievably sexy red-headed fox named Gretta Thompson.
She'd moved to Duxbury about two years ago. And after about six months had opened up shop. That was all he really knew about her. He'd never been in the bar. Though it had simultaneously become a hit with the younger locals, and an endless source of gossip for the elders.
“So what did you find when you went to go check on him?” Bob asked. Feeling a faint sense of apprehension as he did so.
“That's the thing Bab.” George said in a hushed tone. “There wasn't no one back there when I got up there. Just an empty alleyway with the dampstah in the back.”
“But I got this real weird feelin' Bab. This real weird feelin' that Old Man Pete was in that dampstah.” Georgey continued.
Bob already did not like where this was headed. Though admittedly he had absolutely no freaking idea where this was headed.
“So I get to like about ten feet away from the dampstah, and somethin's telling me. Somethin's telling me not to get any closer. So I call out Pete's name. Feeling a bit silly as I do, mind you.”
Bob smirked despite himself. Yes. Silly was one word for it.
“And just as I say his name there comes the sound of trash slammin' around. And I mean a loud sound! And the dampstah...” George trailed off as he gave a shudder. “The dampstah Bab... It jerked towards me!”
Bob raised an eyebrow.
“The dumpster jerked towards you?” The words just didn't sound right.
“Yeah Bab. And I mean like three *freakin*' feet!”
“So what did you do?”
At this George looked incredulous.
“What did I do?! I fackin' ran for my damn life! That's what I did Bab!”
“Okay. Okay.” Bob said. Raising his hands once again. “Let's go.”
“Go where?”
“Back to Barnes Market.”
“Back?”
“Yes.” He said. Pinching his nose. “Back to the Market.”
“But-.”
“Common Georgey.” Bob cut him off, and started walking...
Five minutes later they were moving down Surplus Road. Almost halfway to their destination. Up ahead loomed the wooden bridge that went over Bluefish River. The raging waters echoing off the surrounding trees that bordered the street on both sides.
Bob had kept up a brisk pace. Partly because he was worried for Old Man Pete. And partly because of his rapidly shrinking timetable. George to his credit, had kept up.
“Are you sure you don't want to call for backup Babby?” He half shouted over the thundering river, just as their feet met weather worn wood.
Bob glanced down at the rushing waters of the Bluefish as they clunked along. The river was normally more than a dozen feet below the bridge. On this day however was half that. If it got any higher, the city would have to close off the bridge.
“Not quite yet George.” He shouted back. “I think I'd like to check things out for myself before I go and do that.”
After another moment they were across the river and back on asphalt. With each step the thundering of the Bluefish faded.
Bob looked up at the looming trees on either side of them. The White Pines had grown more full, and lush than ever before. Bob gazed off into the shadows of the surrounding forest.
There was pretty much nothing for about the next quarter mile. Nothing but trees, and encroaching swamp water that is. Pretty much everything West of Tremont Street was flooded.
But thankfully the four businesses that made up East Cove Plaza had thus far been spared from the weather. Being located about a half mile East of Tremont, on the corner where Reynolds Way crossed Surplus.
As they walked, Bob reflected on the dumpster in question. It was a fifteen yarder if he recalled correctly. Situated between Barne's Market, and the Red Herring for the convenience of both businesses. With all the flooding it really wouldn't be too outlandish if a bear, or some other critter had made it's way down and jumped in looking for food.
They came to a flooded part in the road just as they hit the intersection of South Station Street. The water stretching all the way to the woods on both the right, and left. They wordlessly walked to the right.
Entering the edge of the woods, they used the rocks, and roots to keep their feet as dry as possible, as they made their way. The water stretched on down the street for a good twenty feet before relinquishing it's hold on the road.
Soon the surrounding forest gave way once again to a suburban sprawl. Up ahead in the distance stood East Cove Plaza. He felt an inexplicable twinge of apprehension at the sight of the buildings. And for about a second, he really did want to call for back up.
But what would he tell dispatch? Boston George thinks that there's a monster in the dumpster behind Barne's Market? Yeah. That would go over well.
After another moment of walking they had reached the front entrance of Barne's. The “now open” sign still hung in the window. Bob opened the door, and stepped inside. They were greeted by the refreshing coolness of the air-conditioned store.
“Mister Barnes?” Bob called out.
No answer. Save for the soft hum of the air-conditioning unit. Bob walked deeper into the store. Swiveling his head this way, and that, as he continued moving down one of the aisles.
“Pete?”
Again no answer. This wasn't good. Something was up.
“I'm tellin' ya he's not in here Babby.” Boston George said in a hushed tone from behind.
“Officer Maxwell?” Came a voice from the back of the store.
Both men turned to see Pete's nephew Doug Jenkins emerge from the back storage room. Doug was in his forties. He seemed to possess an endless supply of plaid shirts, and blue jeans that he wore no matter how high the temperature was. A nice guy. Though a bit slow.
“Hey Doug.” Bob said, with a wave. “I was just looking for Pete. Have you seen him?”
At this Doug shook his head.
“I was supposed to meet him here. We're going down to the dinner at Saint John's tonight. But I can't find him Bob.”
That last part carried with it a tone of worry.
“Don't worry Duggy.” Bob managed a smile. “We'll find him. I'm going to take a look around outside. Why don't you stay here in case he shows back up?”
Duggy nodded.
“Okay.” He said.
“Cool beans. Alright, me and Georgey here are gonna take a look around back. We'll meet you back here in ten minutes if we don't find him.”
And with that George, and Bob turned and walked back out. The sticky summer heat practically slammed into them as they stepped through the doorway. Together they walked in silence to the entrance of the alleyway.
They rounded the corner, and just stood there for a moment. The area was empty, save for the hulking form of the dumpster that stood in the back. It was a big, ugly thing. Standing about six feet high. And yeah. It was a fifteen yarder.
“There's no way Pete fell in there.” Bob thought to himself as he scrutinized the hunk of metal.
There was something off about it though. But he couldn't quite put his finger on what. At first glance it appeared the same as it always had.
It was just as rusty, and weather worn as ever. Still the same dirty green color, with the words "Patterson Waste Disposal" written in big white letters on it's beat up exterior. He was pretty sure that Boston George was right though. The Dumpster seemed like it was farther from the back wall than normal.
Maybe George had been partially correct. Perhaps some bear or something had wondered down and climbed in looking for food. Again considering the flooding it wasn't outside of the realm of possibility. After all the wildlife was known to wander into town from time, to time.
Bob moved cautiously forward and then stopped when he was about fifteen feet away. Some vague, primal instinct warning him not to get any closer.
He stood there in silence for a moment. Listening for any sign of movement from within the rusty metal structure. Nothing. Not a sound. He straightened, and let out a sigh. Jesus. He was being ridiculous.
Boston George was just buzzed. Pete Barnes had just gone out on some sudden errand, and forgotten to lock up. Yeah, that was it. He started to turn back to George when he noticed the shoe.
It was just lying there about three feet in front of the dumpster. It was black. That was about all he could tell from this distance.
But he knew. He just knew that it was a black Penny Loafer. And there was only one guy around here who sported those kind of kicks.
“Mister Barnes?” Bob called out toward the dumpster. Knowing full well how ridiculous he would look to his peers in that moment. He received no reply.
He took a few more cautious steps forward. Calling out again. Once again being answered with silence.
God what if he had fallen in?! As impossible as it seemed. What if Barnes had fallen in, and was lying broken and bleeding, right now, as he stood there like an idiot?!
“What's goin' on fellas?”
A voice suddenly asked from behind, causing both men to jump. Bob turned around only to see Christie Villarmarin's Pug like face. Christie was the “owner” of East Bay Salon.
What that really meant was that her husband, District Circuit Court Judge Troy Villarmarin; Had bought his incredibly unpleasant wife a business. So as to keep her out of his hair. And quite literally in someone else's.
“Everything alright Officer Maxwell?” She asked innocently.
Bob didn't really dislike people as a rule of thumb. It was not in his nature. But *God Damn* if Christie just didn't naturally piss him off.
She was one of the town gossip “ring leader's”. As his mother always put it. Christie had an affinity for other people's business. Her Salon only amplified her powers. Bob noticed a few of Christie's customers/cronies had gathered on the sidewalk in front of the Salon, and were watching their conversation with rapt attention.
And God Dammit if he didn't have time for this! It was going on 1:15 and he hadn't even made it down to Barry's yet! Christie was a shark, circling a piece of meat on a hook. But he wasn't going to give her one bite.
“Yes ma’am.” Bob said. Beaming. “We're just looking for Old Ma- Mister Barnes. I think he may have stepped out and forgotten to lock up.”
“Oh.” Was all Christie said. Mirroring the Deputy's smile right back at him.
For a moment the two just stood there, beaming their smiles at one another. Boston George looked back and forth between the two of them. Lifting an eyebrow in confusion at their “smile duel”.
“Why good afternoon everyone!”
The three turned to see Father John, standing with Sheriff Copper and Deputy David Quimby. The Priest was dressed in his usual black underwrap. He was carrying a cake with pink frosting in a big tupperware. The short, balding , round man wore his usual warm toothy grin.
“Bobby!” The Sheriff said in greeting, and began walking up.
“Great.” Bob thought.
Copper nodded at Christie.
“Ma’am.”
“Sheriff.” Christie smiled. This time the expression was genuine though.
Copper reached Bob and gave him a clap on the back.
“Don't tell me you got stood up?!” He said. Letting out a great bellowing laugh as he did.
“No Sheriff I-.”
“I'm just teasin' you Bobby.” Copper cut him off. “Ol' Duggy told me about Mister Barnes.”
Bob noticed Doug poking his head around the corner.
“I told the Sheriff you was looking for Pete.” He said.
“Thanks Doug.” Bob replied.
“Me and the boys here were just on our way down to get ready for the Church Cookout tonight.” Copper said with a grin.
He turned to face the others.
“Now this right here is a shining example of an outstanding Officer of the Law. Even off duty, right before a big date no less, we find Bobby here still ensuring the safety of our citizens.” He laughed once again. His big belly bouncing up, and down.
“A date?” Christie quirked an eyebrow at this.
“Shit.” Bob thought.
“Yes Deputy Maxwell.” Father John cut. Smiling up at Bob, who stood a full head taller than the man.
“You truly are a good man, aren't you? You know you are always welcome in God's house my son. Perhaps tonight you, and you're lady friend might stop by, and partake in the festivities?”
“Th- Thank you Father. We just might do that.” Bob lied.
“Tell ya' what Bobby.” Copper said. “Why don't you go run along, and let me handle finding Mister Barnes?”
Bob let out a sigh of relief.
“Thanks Sheriff. I owe you one.”
The Sheriff waved this off with a grin.
“Don't mention it Bobby. But before you go, do you have any leads?”
“Leads?” Bob asked, not understanding.
Copper laughed.
“Yeah ya'know?! Like any idea where Barnes might have got off to?”
Just then there came a brief, faint echo of shifting trash from within the big green dumpster behind them. Everyone turned.
“I don't know. But I noticed a shoe that looks like one of his beside the dumpster.”
“Um. So did you take a look?” Quimby asked.
Deputy David Quimby could have passed for Larry Wilcox's twin. He acted like it to. The all American high school football hero, turned cop. Every day on the job you'd think that Quimby was acting out an episode of Chip's Patrol.
The man was wearing his pump-action Mossberg 590 strapped to his back. Though of course he didn't need it. The Deputy almost always had the weapon on him. He thought in made him look tough. And in truth it really did help him get laid.
“I actually just got here a minute before you did.” He answered. “I was about to look. But George said that he thought there was some kind of animal in the dumpster. So I was... Assessing the situation before approaching.”
“Hah!” Quimby exclaimed in a clearly fake laugh. Slapping a hand across one knee. “Ya'll are scared of a racoon in a dumpster?!”
“It ain't no racoon Officer Quimby.” Boston George replied in a foreboding tone.
Christie Ackerman huffed.
Bob just ground his teeth. Partly because he couldn't think of an adequate retort. But mostly because the answer might very well be “yes”.
That's when Bob realized how quiet in had gotten. The near constant chirping of chickadees was suddenly absent. He tried to remember if he'd heard any birds when he'd first gotten to the neighborhood.
“Don't none of ya'll worry you're pretty little head's off.” Sheriff Copper said as he began walking down the alleyway. “The Sheriff's on the jo– Oh what in the Hell?”
The Sheriff looked over the other's shoulders. Bob turned. The small group of onlookers from the salon had been joined by a few curious younger folks from the cafe. They were now gathered in the middle of the road watching them.
“Alright!” The Sheriff shouted toward the street. “There ain't nothin' to see here people! We're just havin' a conversation, and ya'll are wastin' your time if you're hoping for some action.”
“And since ya'll are grown up's I don't think that I have to lecture you on how dangerous it is to be standing in the middle of the road. Now I suggest that ya'll git!”
A couple people shuffled their feet. But no one really moved. The Sheriff huffed, and turned back around to face the dumpster.
“Fine.” He said. And began walking.
“Sheriff.” Father John said. And Copper paused. “I'd be careful. The woods, and swamps are not far away. And there's no telling what may have crawled out of the bogs this time of year.”
The Sheriff smiled.
“Awe Father, you're concern for my well being is truly touching. But I'm a big strong man, and think I can handle some little woodland critter.” He winked, and continued moving forward.
Copper walked up to the dumpster while the others watched with trepidation. Everyone except Quimby. He was standing there with his hands on his hips. Smiling ear to ear. No doubt thinking about how he was going to tell everyone at the Station about Bob's newfound dumpster phobia.
The Sheriff made it to within a foot of the dumpster and looked in. Nothing happened. He turned around to face the others. A big shit-eating "I'm better than you grin" plastered on his face.
"Ya'see fellas." he said. "There ain't nothing to be afraid of."
"Are ya' sure sheriff?" Boston George asked hesitantly.
Copper shrugged, and turned back around. Stepping up to the lip of the dumpster, he stood on his tip-toes to get a better look.
"Whatever animal it was prob-." The Sheriff's words caught in his throat and his body froze up like a dear in headlights.
"Jesus, Mary, and Jose-!" Copper's words were cut short as the two hundred and thirty pound man was violently ripped off his feet. Simultaneously there came a small explosion of trash. Garbage whizzed by, and Copper's uniform billowed as if caught in a strong gust of wind.
The big man went up, and over the edge. Disappearing in a blur. He didn't even have time to scream. Everyone instinctively back-pedaled.
The group of onlookers that had gathered in the street quickly herded themselves back across to the sidewalk on the other side of the road. The smaller group that had been near the dumpster practically leapt backward to the lip of the alleyway.
Deputy Quimby shouted in surprise. Christie screamed, and Bob joined her. To the passerby it might have sounded like the two were having a "damsel in distress " screaming contest. If they had been Deputy Maxwell, to his credit, would have won.
"Oh my Gaaad! Oh my Gaaad!" Boston George was shrieking over, and over as he back-pedaled into the street. His hysterics were abruptly cut short as he was suddenly struck by Henry McDuff's truck.
Marcus's son hadn't even noticed Boston George until the man was rolling up onto his hood. The farmer panicked as George smashed into his windshield. Simultaneously jerking the wheel hard to the left, while slamming on the breaks.
A split second later the rusty, red pickup smashed into a car parked in front of East Bay Salon. George went rolling off and over the hood of the other vehicle. Falling over the other side, and disappearing from McDuff's view almost as quickly as he'd appeared.
The open bed of the truck had been literally overflowing with freshly harvested apples. Upon impact, the fruit erupted out of the bed like a volcano. Creating a small apple tsunami that rolled across the street.
The screeching of tires forced Bob's horrified gaze from the the spot where Sheriff Copper had recently occupied, to the street behind him. But only for a moment. Once he realized that it was just a car accident he quickly snapped his gaze back down the alleyway. Pulling out his service revolver as he did so. Carnivorous dumpsters taking precedence over car accidents.
For a moment everybody just stood there in silence. Then there came a great rumble from within the Dumpster that to Bob, sounded like a giant burping. At the same time several pieces of trash shot up high into the air.
The crowd took another collective step backward as the assorted debris came raining down. Clattering, and clanking to the ground between themselves and the alleyway. Glass shattered. Empty metal cans went bouncing across the pavement.
The smaller group at the edge of the alley raised their hands over their heads protectively as garbage came falling to the ground all around them. A big aluminum can bounced off Bob's shoulder. It didn't really hurt, but it did make him jump.
The last thing to land was the Sheriff's hat. The brim had a jagged tear that looked like a shark had taken a bite out of it. The sight of the hat was apparently Quimby's breaking point.
For a second later the man let out a howl that was one part terror, and one part war cry. He raised the Pump Action (which Bob only now realized the Deputy had unslung from his back) and the weapon “BOOMED!” deafeningly. It happened so fast that Bob hadn't even had time to shout at him to stop, or he could hit the Sheriff.
The buckshot struck the side of the Dumpster. Sending out a shower of sparks. But as far as Bob could tell it failed to penetrate the thick metal.
Quimby continued moving forward. Pumping his shotgun and firing over, and over. Howling like a madman all the while.

2020.08.27 18:34 psyorganism Anyone know an open nail salon?

I remember reading nail and hair salons can open if they perform services outside. Has anyone actually seen an open nail salon?
Yes, it's super shallow, but having my nails nice really cheers me up.
Edit: I guess I got confused about the dates but it's actually happening on Monday? https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/San-Francisco-hair-nail-salons-barbershops-gyms-15522336.php
